A deeply tragic accident has been reported from Rajasthan's Bikaner district, where a 5-year-old boy died after falling into a large pot of boiling dal that was being prepared for his grandfather's condolence gathering. The incident has left the family and the surrounding community in mourning.
How the accident unfolded in Udrasar village
The incident took place in Udrasar village in the Sriddungargarh area of Bikaner district. The family had organised a condolence meeting following the death of the children's grandfather, and food was being prepared for the relatives who had gathered for the occasion. A large vessel of dal was boiling nearby when 5-year-old Sanket, who was running around while playing, dashed up to the spot and fell straight into the pot of boiling lentils. People at the scene screamed and rushed to pull him out, but the damage had already been done. It was found that more than 90 percent of his body had suffered severe burns. The family rushed him to the nearest hospital, where doctors, seeing the seriousness of his condition, gave him first aid before referring him to Prince Bijay Singh Memorial Hospital in Bikaner. Sanket died there during treatment.
A family already in mourning
Sanket's father works as a daily-wage labourer to support the family. Sanket was the middle child among three siblings, with an elder brother seven years older than him and a younger sister three years younger. The family had not even come to terms with the death of the grandfather when Sanket's death struck them with a second, devastating blow.
What police said about the sequence of events
Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajkumar, giving details of the case, said the deceased child was identified as Sanket. He said Sanket's grandfather, Kanaram Meghwal, had died on July 26. Following family tradition, a condolence meeting was held on the eighth day after his death, that is, on August 2, and food was being prepared for the guests attending it. It was during this that Sanket, who was playing nearby, fell into the large pot of boiling dal, triggering panic at the scene. People immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital, but despite first aid, he could not be saved and died during treatment.
