A major security operation is underway along the western border of India as the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) intensifies its crackdown on a sophisticated smuggling and espionage network. The network, which has deep links to Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI, has been actively attempting to transport narcotics and illegal weapons into the country. Investigators have uncovered a dangerous nexus involving Pakistani gangster Shahzad Bhatti, who has been trying to establish a foothold in the border districts of Rajasthan. Several suspects have been detained, and a widespread operation is ongoing to neutralize local collaborators assisting these cross-border operatives.
Infiltration Attempts in Border Districts
The ATS has identified several critical border areas where this illegal network was attempting to spread its roots. Strategically vulnerable districts such as Ganganagar, Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner have been the primary targets for these infiltration attempts. According to security officials, contraband and arms were being pushed across the international border from Pakistan, with local accomplices stationed in these districts facilitating their further transit into the Indian mainland. In response to these activities, the ATS has launched aggressive raid operations across these regions to track down and apprehend every individual associated with the smuggling racket.
The Role of ISI and Local Facilitators
Sharing crucial insights into the investigation, ADG Dinesh M. N. emphasized that the scope of the crackdown is not restricted solely to individuals who are in direct communication with the ISI. The security agency is systematically identifying and prosecuting local facilitators who have joined this network, often driven by financial greed or other personal motivations. Recent sweeps by the ATS have led to the apprehension of multiple suspects, and authorities are meticulously tracing the background of anyone found to have even the slightest connection to this cross-border network.
The ADG further clarified that the conspiracy is far more extensive than the actions of gangster Shahzad Bhatti alone. High-ranking officers within the Pakistani intelligence agency are actively coordinating these operations. Beyond smuggling dangerous weapons and narcotics, these hostile actors are also attempting to conduct espionage by enticing local residents with various lucrative offers to collect photographs and videos of sensitive locations. Legal proceedings are being initiated against both the individuals directly recruited by foreign agencies and those operating under their influence.
Targeted Arrests in Hanumangarh, Ganganagar, and Barmer
The security crackdown has already yielded significant results in key border towns. Only a few days ago, law enforcement agencies arrested individuals in Hanumangarh and Ganganagar who were actively conducting reconnaissance and managing logistics for Shahzad Bhatti. Following these arrests, the search operations were extended to Barmer and other neighboring border districts. Just three days ago, another key operative working for Bhatti was successfully apprehended in Barmer, demonstrating the tight surveillance net cast by the ATS along the border.
Dismantling the Rohit Godara Gang
Alongside the cross-border smuggling network, the ATS is also aggressively targeting domestic criminal syndicates, particularly the gang led by notorious criminal Rohit Godara. ADG Dinesh M. N. stated that Rohit Godara is a highly wanted criminal not only in Rajasthan but also across several other northern states, including Punjab and Haryana. While acknowledging the inherent diplomatic and logistical challenges of arresting an accused individual who is currently operating from a foreign country, the ADG reassured that the gang’s operational network within Rajasthan is being systematically dismantled.
To date, law enforcement agencies have successfully busted five to six operational modules of the Rohit Godara gang, resulting in the seizure of a significant cache of illegal weapons. The primary objective of these targeted operations is to prevent violent crimes such as extortion-related shootings and contract killings within the state. Security forces are also focusing on providing robust protection to individuals who have received threats from the gang, while simultaneously initiating strict legal action against anyone providing financial, logistical, or physical shelter to members of this criminal network.
