Janmashtami turned into a spectacular affair at the well known Sanwaliyaji shrine in Udaipur district, as devotees streamed in from early morning right through the night to catch a glimpse of Bhagwan Sanwaliya Seth. Queues outside the sanctum kept swelling long after the morning Mangla aarti, with the temple staying packed well past midnight as families waited patiently for their turn at darshan.
Sky lights up as 1000-plus drones take flight
Around 8 pm, the night sky above the temple turned into a canvas as more than a thousand drones rose together in formation. The synchronized fleet traced out scenes from Krishna's life, from a glimpse of Radha and Krishna together to young Kanhaiya sneaking butter from a pot. The crowd broke into cheers and chants as the shapes shifted overhead, many recording the display on their phones. Hazari Das Vaishnav, president of the Shri Sanwaliyaji Mandir Mandal Board, said "the leelas of the lord were presented through the drone show in a modern format." He added that the glowing formations left a lasting impression on everyone watching and became the talk of the evening.
Midnight birth marked with grand aarti
Just before the birth ceremony, Sanwaliya Seth was given a special shringar. The moment the clock struck midnight, the announcement of Krishna's birth sent the temple complex into a devotional frenzy. A large crowd caught the birth darshan and joined in the maha aarti, raising jaikaras through the celebration. Dinesh Chandra Dhakad, CEO of the temple mandal, said an elaborate fireworks display was also set off above the temple during the festivities. Colourful bursts lit up the sky against the backdrop of the temple's decorative lighting, while projection mapping on the temple facade added another visual layer that drew appreciation from the devotees present.
Flower-decked temple, tableaux and an akhada show
For the occasion, the entire temple had been dressed in flowers, giving it the look of a bride on her wedding day. Religious tableaux set up across the premises retold episodes from Krishna's childhood and his various leelas, while a separate akhada performance also drew a good crowd of onlookers who stopped to watch the wrestlers.
Free buses from parking lots, relief from the heat
To manage the crowds, the temple mandal worked with the local administration to set up multiple parking zones around the shrine. Free shuttle buses ferried devotees between these parking spots and the temple gates through the day and night. For those standing for hours in the queues, fans, coolers and water-filled campers were placed at several points along the route to offer relief from the heat, a detail devotees appreciated after such a long wait.
