Nestled deep within the picturesque Aravalli range in Rajasthan's Sirohi district, an ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has emerged as a major spiritual and natural attraction. Located roughly 5 kilometers away from the city of Aburoad, the sacred Amreshwar Mahadev Temple sits inside a natural formation known as Pili Gufa in the Umarni hills. The site commands immense reverence among local devotees while simultaneously captivating nature enthusiasts with its serene environment, surrounded by dense forests and rugged mountains that offer a deep sense of peace.
Rich history tied to ascetic traditions
The spiritual legacy of this site runs deep, having served as a rigorous meditation ground for revered saints over generations. The administration and upkeep of the temple are managed by ascetics belonging to the Niranjani Akhada. Historical accounts note that a former head ascetic, Mahant Ganeshgiri Maharaj, spent an astounding 65 years performing intense penance at this very location. Following his passing, Mahant भीमगिरी महाराज took over the stewardship of the temple. Today, the memorials of both revered saints stand proudly on a rocky outcrop in the upper section of the temple grounds. The surrounding landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation during the monsoon season, when rainwater gushes down a seasonal stream directly in front of the Pili Gufa entrance, enhancing the picturesque appeal. Furthermore, several other ancient landmarks, including the Rishikesh Temple and the Bhadrakali Temple, are situated nearby.
The mythological legend of King Ambareesh
Perched directly above the cave temple is a massive foundation stone that captures the imagination of every visitor. The rock formation on the hill appears as though it is resting without any physical support underneath. A fascinating mythological narrative surrounds this boulder. According to Bhadrakali Temple priest Raju Maharaj, King Ambareesh performed severe penance right atop this very foundation stone in ancient times. The intensity of his devotion reportedly shook the throne of Lord Indra in the heavens. Alarmed by the mortal king's spiritual power, Indra attempted to disrupt the penance by striking the spot with a thunderbolt. However, to shield the devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, the mountain's heavy stone remained suspended in mid-air, allowing the king to complete his meditation undisturbed.
Tourism potential and local significance
To this day, pilgrims and curious travelers make the journey to witness this gravity-defying boulder and the Pili Gufa situated directly beneath it. Reaching the base stone requires a short climb starting from inside the Pili Gufa. Combining striking natural geological formations with deep-rooted mythological lore, this destination remains among the prominent heritage spots in the Sirohi district that stand to benefit from improved infrastructure and broader recognition.
