A remarkable demonstration of civic commitment emerged from the Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan, where residents of a remote settlement overcame severe physical obstacles to participate in local self-government elections. Located within the Dhamotar panchayat samiti area, Karmi village remains physically isolated by the reservoir waters of the Jakham dam and rough wilderness, yet its voters demonstrated that geographic hurdles could not weaken their determination to exercise their democratic franchise.
A Settlement of 250 Cut Off From Basic Infrastructure
Karmi is home to a modest population of approximately 250 residents who continue to live without essential modern civic amenities. Reliable road connectivity, electricity, and basic healthcare infrastructure remain out of reach, leaving everyday survival an ongoing struggle. Despite being isolated from mainstream civic development in the modern era, the villagers showed extraordinary dedication when the time arrived to vote in the Panchayati Raj elections.
A Treacherous 13-Kilometer Journey to the Polling Station
Reaching the polling station required residents to navigate a grueling and hazardous route spanning 13 kilometers. The first leg of this travel demanded crossing roughly 3 kilometers of deep water across the Jakham dam reservoir using small boats. Upon disembarking from the boats, the voters faced a second, equally demanding challenge, walking approximately 10 kilometers through dense jungle along rough, unpaved tracks with virtually no modern transport options available.
Administrative Reorganization Leaves Challenges Unresolved
Administratively, Karmi village was earlier attached to the Gyaspur gram panchayat. In subsequent administrative reorganization, a new gram panchayat named Anuppur was formed, and Karmi was placed under its jurisdiction. However, local residents point out that changing the administrative boundaries has done nothing to alleviate their ground-level isolation, as the lack of roads and bridge access continues unchanged.
Unshaken Democratic Resolve Alongside Demands for Redress
Neither neglect nor hazardous traveling conditions dampened voter enthusiasm on polling day. Men and women from the village undertook the demanding journey across water and wilderness to register their choices at the ballot box. While their turnout stands as a powerful testament to the strength of democratic values in rural India, the villagers have also urged local authorities to prioritize durable infrastructure, demanding direct road links so they are no longer forced to risk their lives for fundamental rights and essential needs.
