A shocking incident of fraud was reported right outside JLN Hospital in Ajmer, Rajasthan, where two unidentified conmen tricked a woman into handing over gold and silver jewelry valued at approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. The victim had arrived at the medical facility to inquire about a relative's health when the fraudsters approached her under the pretext of seeking assistance. After convincing her to remove her worn ornaments, the tricksters pretended to wrap them in a cloth, substituted the valuables with stone pieces, and vanished from the spot before she realized the deception.
Posing as Needy Persons, Swindlers Swap Jewels with Handkerchief of Stones
The victim, identified as Kanta Devi, wife of Mohan Singh and a resident of Rambagh Bhagwanganj, had visited JLN Hospital for routine care of a family member. As she reached the vicinity outside the hospital building, two men intercepted her by posing as destitute individuals in desperate need of help. Through persuasive talk and emotional manipulation, they managed to gain her complete confidence. While engaging her in conversation, the duo cleverly convinced her to take off all her gold and silver ornaments, which were worth around Rs 2.5 lakh. Taking advantage of the situation, the suspects pretended to securely wrap the jewelry inside a handkerchief. However, through quick sleight of hand, they kept the real ornaments, bound ordinary stone pieces inside the cloth bundle, handed it back to the unsuspecting woman, and quickly fled the scene.
Kotwali Police File Case and Scan Nearby CCTV Footage
Suspicious of the encounter, Kanta Devi opened the handkerchief shortly after the men departed, only to discover plain stones inside instead of her valuable jewelry. Shocked by the betrayal, she raised an alarm and searched the immediate surrounding area, but the culprits had already blended into the crowd and escaped. She immediately went to the Kotwali police station to register an official complaint detailing the entire incident. Following her statement, the police initiated an investigation and began scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed across the JLN Hospital premises, adjoining roads, and commercial establishments nearby to identify the suspects. Officers are also questioning local shopkeepers and eyewitnesses who were present in the area at the time. Police officials stated that efforts are underway to trace the culprits using technical evidence, while also urging members of the public to exercise caution around strangers.
