Mention Radha Rani, and most people instantly think of Barsana, the village she has been named after for centuries as the girl from Barsana. But a separate belief prevalent across the Braj region holds that her actual birthplace was not Barsana but Rawal village near Mathura. While there is no dispute over Lord Krishna being born in Mathura, several different claims have surrounded the birthplace of Radha Rani over the years. The Kamal Kund, a pond located in Rawal village, is considered the strongest evidence backing this belief, and thousands of devotees visit it every single day.
The Kamal Kund still stands, now restored for visitors
The pond and lotus flower associated with the story of Radha Rani's birth still exist in Rawal village today. Over time the pond underwent restoration and was opened up for devotees so that people could come, witness it and connect more closely with the story of her birth. Remarkably, thousands of lotus flowers can still be seen blooming in the Kamal Kund even now. Visitors say that arriving at the pond feels almost like stepping into the Dwapar Yug itself. Everyone who comes here is said to experience a distinct sense of joy and peace, and many devotees, immersed in devotion, chant the name Radha and lose themselves completely in that state.
How Mother Kirti found Radha Rani inside a lotus
According to belief, the Kamal Kund dates back to the Dwapar era. As the story goes, Mother Kirti used to come to this very pond every day to bathe. In that period, the bank of the river Yamuna passed directly through this pond, meaning the pond and the Yamuna were right next to each other. One day, as Mother Kirti finished bathing and turned to leave, a lotus flower brushed against her hands. The moment she picked it up to look at it, its petals opened on their own, and a beautiful girl child laughed out from within it. Since Mother Kirti had no children of her own at the time, she happily accepted the girl as her daughter. That is why Radha Rani continues to be known even today as the daughter of Mother Kirti.
Locals believe Rawal is the real birthplace, devotees arrive daily
Krishna Chauhan, a young man who travelled from Mathura to Rawal village for darshan, said that the real birthplace of Radha Rani is Rawal village. He said a large number of devotees arrive here for darshan every single day and that Rawal village is known specifically as the birthplace of Radha Rani. Chauhan explained that Mother Kirti used to come to bathe in the Yamuna daily, and it was during one such visit that she received Radha Rani from within a lotus flower. He added that people who visit the pond experience deep peace, and that all their worries tend to fade away.
Memories of the Dwapar era still alive on the Yamuna bank
This mythological pond linked to Radha Rani continues to stand as a witness to her birth even today. Located on the bank of the Yamuna, the Kamal Kund still evokes the moment from the Dwapar era when Mother Kirti found Radha Rani inside a lotus flower. That is why, beyond Barsana, this village of Rawal in Mathura has also become an important stop on the religious and spiritual journey through Braj, drawing devotees who come to witness this unique belief tied to the birthplace of Radha Rani.
