The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports gave formal approval on September 2 for a 768-member Indian contingent slated to compete at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4, 2026, the quadrennial event will see 503 Indian athletes compete across numerous sports, supported by a 246-member delegation of officials and support staff.
Gender Composition and Support Infrastructure
The Sports Ministry had initially sanctioned 492 athletes for the continental spectacle. Following subsequent evaluations, additional sportspeople were incorporated into the contingent, predominantly within the athletics division, pushing the total number of competing athletes to 503. The final roster consists of 269 male and 234 female athletes across various disciplines.
To ensure peak physical and strategic readiness, the 246 support staff members include 23 Chief and Deputy Chief coaches alongside 150 specialized coaches. The auxiliary contingent also integrates medical doctors, physiotherapists, sports psychologists, massage therapists, team managers, and technical specialists. Heading the contingent operations are Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.
Athletics Delegation and Neeraj Chopra Missing
Athletics represents one of the largest contingents within the Indian setup, comprising 79 total members. Reflecting its numerical weight, the athletics discipline has been allocated the largest dedicated support team of 31 personnel, including 20 coaches under the leadership of National Coach P. Radhakrishnan.
However, the Indian camp faces a major void with the absence of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Due to an ongoing injury, Chopra will miss the 20th Asian Games, depriving the nation of one of its top gold-medal prospects.
Cricket Squad Leadership and 36 Sports Representation
Cricket will see both the Indian men's and women's national teams competing on the Asian stage. The Ministry has approved a 20-member dedicated support staff for both cricket squads, which will be spearheaded by former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman.
Overall, Indian competitors will feature across 36 different sports disciplines during the multi-sport event in Aichi-Nagoya. The competitions will take place over a 16-day window starting September 19 and concluding on October 4, 2026.
Building Upon the Historic 2022 Medal Haul
India enters the 2026 Asian Games looking to build upon its landmark performance from the 2022 edition, where the country secured fourth position in the final medal standings. In that edition, Indian athletes amassed an unprecedented total of 106 medals.
The 2022 collection comprised 28 Gold, 38 Silver, and 40 Bronze medals. With a well-rounded 503-athlete squad preparing for Japan, the Indian contingent aims to push its tally even higher and consolidate its standing among Asia's top sporting nations.
