Sucheta Wahi once taught children inside a classroom, but when she decided to venture into the world of manufacturing, she knew practically nothing about the ABCs of the footwear industry. After dedicating 16 years of her life as a teacher at an ICSE board school, she took the bold step of quitting her job in 2004 and launched an industrial safety shoe manufacturing unit located in the Dada Nagar industrial area. The beginning was far from easy because everything from shoe manufacturing technology to market demands and customer requirements was entirely foreign to her. The initial two years were filled with intense challenges and struggles, but she refused to give up.
Learning Production From Scratch and Mastering the Trade
Sucheta Wahi recounts that while she had always worn shoes, she had zero technical knowledge about how footwear was actually manufactured. Upon setting up her unit, she personally dove into understanding every single step of the process, ranging from sampling to final production. Gradually, she mastered the fine details of the trade, and this hands-on learning became her greatest strength in scaling the business. Today, the safety industrial shoes produced in her manufacturing unit are successfully exported to more than 10 countries around the world.
Overcoming Early Hurdles to Build a Global Footprint
She explains that the early phase of establishing and stabilizing the enterprise was fraught with immense difficulties. Circumstances were testing on multiple occasions, but she made a conscious effort to learn every aspect of the work independently. Gaining a close, practical understanding of sampling and production processes steadily boosted her confidence. Following this learning curve, the business gradually picked up momentum, allowing her products to reach domestic markets as well as international destinations.
Fostering an Inclusive Workplace Where Men and Women Work Together
The manufacturing unit run by Sucheta Wahi features an inclusive environment where men and women work side by side. She maintains that creating a better and safer working atmosphere for all employees forms an essential pillar of running any enterprise. She consistently emphasizes boosting female participation in the industrial sector. Serving as the chairperson of the women wing of the Indian Industries Association, she actively works to uplift and support emerging female entrepreneurs.
Empowering Female Entrepreneurs Through Seminars and Workshops
Discussing her responsibilities as the chairperson of the women wing, Sucheta Wahi notes that these organizational duties often leave her with less time for her own core business than she would prefer. Nevertheless, she dedicates herself fully to connecting women entrepreneurs, listening to their operational hurdles, and organizing seminars, workshops, and meetings. She states that whenever any woman entrepreneur requires assistance, she is always ready to step forward and help.
A Inspiring Journey From the Classroom to the Industrial Sector
Sucheta Wahi's remarkable transition from a school teacher to a successful industrialist serves as a powerful testament to the fact that one does not need prior expertise to start a new venture. With a genuine willingness to learn, relentless hard work, and persistent effort, an entirely new path can be carved out successfully.
