In 2007, her husband fell seriously ill and passed away due to a severe ailment. At that crucial juncture, her children were still very young, and there was no other earning member in the family. The financial condition deteriorated rapidly, plunging the household into deep crisis and making daily survival a constant struggle.

During those bleak days, keeping the family afloat often required taking loans from acquaintances just to buy essentials and feed the children. Seeking a way out of the misery, Baby Devi associated herself with the Jeevika self-help group. This association provided the breakthrough she desperately needed. She received an initial financial assistance of 10,000 rupees to kickstart a micro-enterprise. Utilizing this seed capital, she procured basic grocery items and began selling them from underneath a makeshift tarpaulin tent right outside her house.
