Tripura witnessed a steady growth in footfalls during the financial year 2025-26, registering a 3.15 per cent increase in total tourist arrivals compared to the previous financial year. Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury shared these statistics on the opening day of the monsoon session in the state Legislative Assembly while replying to questions raised by lawmakers Tofajjal Hossain and Antara Sarkar Deb concerning regional tourism progress and infrastructural upgrades.
Detailed Breakdown of Domestic and International Footfalls
According to the figures presented in the House, the state welcomed a total of 7,29,414 visitors throughout 2025-26. This overall figure comprised 7,10,243 domestic travelers and 19,171 international guests. In comparison, the total footfall during 2024-25 stood at 7,07,173 visitors, which included 6,27,705 domestic tourists and 79,468 foreign visitors. Looking further back to the 2023-24 financial period, the state recorded 5,45,299 arrivals, consisting of 4,69,328 domestic tourists alongside 75,971 foreign tourists. The data reflects a substantial upward trajectory in domestic travel to the state over the three-year period.
Capital Outlay and Key Destination Infrastructure
Addressing the Assembly on state initiatives to bolster travel facilities, Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted that 12 small and medium destination projects were successfully completed over the past three years. These completed works involved a cumulative expenditure of Rs 87 crore 87 lakh 42 thousand. Furthermore, work is currently progressing on five major tourism projects that carry a combined estimated financial commitment of approximately Rs 400 crore.
These key flagship projects encompass prominent sites such as the 51 Shakti Peetha Park located at Banduar in Udaipur, Chabimura, Narkelkunja, Sonamukhi situated in Unakoti, and Jirania Park. Through these expansive projects, the state government aims to transform regional heritage and natural spots into modern, visitor-friendly destinations.
Council Jurisdiction and Management Clarification
During the legislative proceedings, MLA Ranjit Debbarma asked a supplementary question regarding project locations situated within autonomous tribal areas. In response, the Tourism Minister confirmed that four small and medium tourism project locations fall within the territorial boundaries of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). However, Chowdhury clarified that the state government currently maintains no proposal or plan to hand over its developed tourism facilities to the TTAADC administration. The state continues to position the tourism domain as a vital catalyst for economic growth, infrastructure improvement, and local employment creation.
