A young man died after being electrocuted in Tayapur village under the Jamunapar police station area of Mathura on Tuesday morning, after a high-tension power line snapped and fell to the ground. The victim, identified as Vineet, was struck by the live wire and died on the spot, plunging the entire village into grief while anger mounted against the electricity department over the accident.
11 KV line comes crashing down near a water tank
According to the details available, the accident took place around 5 am on Tuesday near a water tank in Tayapur village in the Jamunapar area of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh. An 11 KV high-tension line suddenly snapped and fell straight to the ground. Vineet, who happened to be nearby at the time, came into direct contact with the live wire. Because an 11,000 volt line carries an extremely powerful current, even brief contact with it can prove fatal, and that is exactly what happened to Vineet, who collapsed instantly at the spot. Panic spread through the neighbourhood as soon as word of the accident got around, and a large crowd of villagers quickly gathered at the site.
Police and power department teams reach the spot, body sent for postmortem
As soon as the police were informed, a team from Jamunapar police station rushed to the scene, along with officials from the electricity department. The police inspected the site closely, took custody of Vineet's body and sent it for a postmortem examination, while also opening an investigation into the accident. Electricity department officials, for their part, surveyed the spot and began a technical inquiry, assuring residents that appropriate action would be taken against whoever is found responsible for the lapse.
Villagers accuse power department of ignoring decaying wires for years
The accident triggered widespread anger among residents against the electricity department. Villagers alleged that several power lines in and around Tayapur have been left hanging in a dilapidated condition for a long time. They said they had repeatedly complained about the state of the wires, but the department neither inspected nor repaired them despite the warnings. Such snapping of old, poorly maintained power lines is a recurring complaint in many rural pockets, and it often results in loss of life. Locals insisted that had the ageing lines been fixed in time, the accident, and Vineet's death, could easily have been avoided.
Demand for compensation and urgent repair of the ageing power lines
Angry villagers have placed a set of demands before the authorities. They want adequate compensation paid to Vineet's family, action taken against the electricity department officials held responsible for the negligence, and an immediate inspection and repair of all dilapidated power lines across the area so that no similar tragedy occurs again. The police are currently investigating the case, while the electricity department is working to determine exactly what caused the high-tension line to snap in the first place.
