Legal troubles have mounted once again for Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Azam Khan. On Sunday, a special PMLA court in Ghaziabad ordered him to be sent to judicial custody for a period of 14 days. The judicial order comes in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities and money laundering linked to the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and the Jauhar Trust.
Custody Application And Legal Arguments In Court
During the court proceedings, the Enforcement Directorate sought a 14-day custody period for Azam Khan to conduct interrogations regarding financial matters tied to the university and its operating trust. Defence lawyers representing Khan firmly opposed the remand application presented by the agency. Following the arguments presented by both legal teams, the special court directed that the political leader be remanded to judicial custody.
Arrest Immediately After Release From Rampur Prison
The court appearance followed high-stakes developments that unfolded outside the Rampur prison on Saturday evening. Khan had just walked out of jail after securing bail from the Allahabad High Court in a case concerning two PAN cards. However, enforcement officials detained him immediately upon his exit from the correctional facility. Leaders and party workers of the Samajwadi Party raised strong objections and held demonstrations against the swift re-arrest.
Tight Courtroom Security And Media Interaction
Strict security protocols were implemented across the Ghaziabad court complex during the hearing, with a heavy deployment of personnel alongside a large gathering of media representatives. As reporters questioned Azam Khan outside the courtroom asking whether he wished to comment on the proceedings, he responded with a brief remark, "Now what is even left to say?"
Prison Protocol And Lodging At Dasna Jail
Following the judicial pronouncement, Azam Khan is expected to be lodged at the Dasna jail in Ghaziabad. Jail Superintendent Sitaram Sharma stated that standard prison rules apply equally to every newly arrived inmate, regardless of whether admission occurs on a Sunday or during a regular working day. Prison regulations dictate that incoming inmates are initially housed in a general barrack, and these established protocols will govern his stay.
