In a major crackdown against illegal drug trafficking across key railway hubs in Uttar Pradesh, a joint patrolling team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a smuggler at Kanpur Central railway station. The operation led to the recovery of 13 kilograms and 650 grams of high-grade cannabis, commonly known as ganja, concealed inside a heavy trolley bag. The estimated market value of the seized contraband in international illicit markets is stated to be over 15 lakh rupees. Railway police have taken the suspect into custody and registered a formal case.
Suspect Apprehended Near Peepal Tree Behind Toilet Complex
The law enforcement action took place late in the night on 20 August 2026, at approximately 12:40 AM. The joint checking team, led by GRP Kanpur Central Inspector In-charge Om Narayan Singh and RPF Post In-charge Siddhanath Patidar, was conducting a routine security inspection of the station premises. While patrolling the circulating area on the Cantt side of the station, officers spotted a man standing in the shadows under a Peepal tree located behind a Sulabh Shouchalay public toilet complex.
The individual was holding a large trolley bag and displaying nervous, suspicious behavior in the late-night hours. When officers approached the man to inquire about his destination and luggage, he panicked. Instead of answering the questions, the suspect attempted to abandon his luggage and flee the spot. However, alert security personnel swiftly surrounded him and prevented his escape. Upon unzipping the trolley bag in the presence of witnesses, officers found multiple sealed packets containing contraband. Subsequent weighing confirmed the batch to be 13 kg 650 grams of cannabis.
Smuggling Route Traced From Odisha to Anand Vihar in Delhi
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested suspect confessed that he had procured the contraband consignment from a supplier in the state of Odisha. His destination was the Anand Vihar area of National Capital Territory Delhi, where he was tasked with handing over the parcel to a designated contact. After traveling from Odisha, he arrived at Kanpur Central and was waiting under the tree for a train bound for Anand Vihar when police intercepted him.
The arrested individual has been identified as 36-year-old Vinay Kumar Sharma, son of Dhruv Shankar Sharma. He is a resident of Rama Chhapra village under Daraunda police station limits in Siwan district of Bihar. Investigators are currently assessing whether the accused is a seasoned inter-state smuggler or if he was hired as a carrier by a larger syndicate for a specific payout.
Special Operation Executed Under Senior Railway Police Directives
This anti-narcotics operation was carried out under the direct monitoring of Superintendent of Police (SP) Railway Prayagraj Section Prashant Verma, along with strategic operational guidelines issued by Deputy Superintendent of Police (CO) Railway Kanpur Sheshmani Upadhyay. Senior officers have instructed all stations under the division to maintain heightened vigilance against suspicious individuals carrying heavy baggage through passenger areas.
Railway authorities noted that drug traffickers frequently attempt to utilize dense passenger movement at major junction stations like Kanpur Central to transport illegal substances between states. To counter these tactics, security teams have intensified round-the-clock random searches and bag screening procedures across platforms and circulating zones.
Investigation Focuses on Backward and Forward Supply Links
Following the seizure and arrest, railway police have turned their focus toward uncovering the broader criminal network supporting this smuggling operation. Special teams are analyzing call detail records and phone contacts to identify the specific individual in Odisha who supplied the 13.65 kg consignment, as well as the intended recipient awaiting delivery in Anand Vihar, Delhi.
In addition, police are coordinating with local authorities in Siwan district, Bihar, to check for any previous criminal cases registered against Vinay Kumar Sharma. Officials reiterated that intensive monitoring across railway stations and trains will remain ongoing to disrupt drug supply routes passing through the state.
