The Background of Lalita Gautam and the Incident
Lalita Gautam, 20, was a BA student residing with her family in the Gagan Enclave area of TP Nagar, Meerut. On May 15, Lalita left her home to appear for an examination, but when she did not return by late evening, her family grew deeply concerned. After their own initial efforts to locate her proved futile, the family filed a missing person report at the TP Nagar police station. The police initiated a thorough investigation, which included analyzing footage from CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity. During this review, investigators spotted Lalita in the company of a youth identified as Ankush, a resident of Kalyanpur village. This breakthrough led the police to form multiple teams and intensify the search for the suspect.
The Catalyst for Protests
Because Lalita Gautam belonged to the Dalit community, her murder quickly became a focal point for several Dalit organizations, which organized protests to seek justice. The situation reached a breaking point during recent demonstrations, where the police were forced to resort to a lathi-charge and take several individuals into custody. Officials claim that a large number of protestors were outsiders who had little to no knowledge of the actual facts of the case. Driven by this suspicion and an ensuing argument, the suspect murdered Lalita and transported her body to a sugarcane field located in the Upsiya forest, falling under the jurisdiction of the Rohta police station in Meerut.
