A potential catastrophe was averted on Sunday involving the Gorakhpur-Patna Vande Bharat Express when the train's main loco pilot, Hemant, suddenly lost consciousness. At the time of the incident, the train was traveling at a speed of approximately 70 kilometers per hour, placing the safety of everyone on board at significant risk. Fortunately, the assistant loco pilot acted with remarkable presence of mind, taking control of the train immediately and guiding it safely to Unaula station, thereby preventing what could have been a major accident.
Details of the Incident
The train departed from Gorakhpur Junction on Sunday morning as per its usual schedule. Shortly after crossing the Cantt station, the main loco pilot experienced a sudden medical crisis and fell unconscious. Acting swiftly, the assistant loco pilot managed the situation by successfully stopping the train at Unaula station. Medical personnel were called to provide first aid to the main pilot, who showed signs of improvement and even attempted to resume control of the locomotive. However, once the train reached Pipraich, his condition deteriorated once again.
Operational Adjustments
Following the second medical episode at Pipraich, the main loco pilot was deboarded for further medical treatment and transferred to the Narkatiaganj base. To ensure the safe continuation of the journey, the railway authorities dispatched a replacement loco pilot, a loco instructor, and a guard to Pipraich. The Vande Bharat Express resumed its journey toward Patna only after these new crew members took charge. Sunit Kumar, the CPRO of North Eastern Railway, confirmed the incident and emphasized that the assistant pilot's prompt and sensible actions were instrumental in ensuring the train was brought to a safe halt at the station without any further issues.
