Mau MLA Abbas Ansari appeared before a special court in Banda alongside his wife Nikhat Bano in connection with an ongoing legal proceeding linked to a prison incident. During the court session at the anti-corruption court, he expressed apprehension regarding his personal safety and formally requested the bench to exempt him from future physical appearances. The proceedings drew significant attention as law enforcement agencies managed security arrangements both inside and outside the courthouse premises.
Avoiding Media Interaction at the Courthouse
Throughout his presence at the court complex, Abbas Ansari refrained from speaking to media representatives, maintaining strict distance before departing back for Mau immediately after the hearing concluded. The scheduled court agenda was supposed to involve framing charges against the accused individuals in this long-standing case. However, because several co-accused parties failed to make an appearance, the court could not proceed with framing the charges and instead scheduled the next hearing for September 18.
Origins of the Chitrakoot Jail Controversy
The legal dispute stems from an incident reported in February 2023 at the Ragauli Jail in Chitrakoot. Authorities had uncovered unauthorized meetings between Abbas Ansari, who was imprisoned at the time, and his wife Nikhat Bano. Following the revelation, local police registered criminal cases against Nikhat Bano, her driver Niyaz Ansari, the then jail superintendent Ashok Sagar, a deputy jailer, and several other prison staff members.
Anti-Corruption Act and Gangster Act Invocations
As the police investigation progressed, authorities invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused, followed by subsequent actions under the stringent Gangster Act. During searches linked to the inquiry, investigators reportedly recovered roughly 6 lakh rupees in cash, a car, and two mobile phones from individuals connected to the case. Police maintained that financial resources were utilized to facilitate irregular visits inside the prison facility, prompting a thorough inquiry into the roles played by prison officials.
