In an ongoing crackdown against the illegal trafficking of narcotics, the Kanpur Commissionerate police have achieved a major breakthrough. The Railbazar police station team intercepted a young woman during a routine checking drive and recovered eight kilograms and 295 grams of ganja from her possession. According to the police, the accused woman had arrived in Kanpur carrying the contraband consignment all the way from Bhubaneswar in Odisha. Her plan was to deliver this consignment to an unidentified individual within the city limits. Investigators revealed that the accused has previously admitted to transporting similar consignments from Odisha. The police are now working to piece together the entire criminal network by conducting a forensic examination of her mobile phone and analyzing call detail records.
Meanwhile, authorities noted that just a few days prior to this incident, another individual was apprehended in Kanpur with approximately fifteen lakh rupees worth of ganja while traveling from Odisha toward Delhi.
Suspicious behavior near Shiv Narayan Tandan bridge leads to arrest
According to the Railbazar police station, on September 10, 2026, a police team headed by station in-charge Aman Singh was conducting vehicle and pedestrian checks near the Shiv Narayan Tandan bridge. During this operation, a young woman was spotted coming from the direction of the Parachute Factory carrying a large trolley bag and a backpack. The police stated that the moment the woman noticed the checking team, she panicked, turned around abruptly, and attempted to walk away. Finding her movements suspicious, the police team, with the assistance of female officers, surrounded and intercepted her. Upon conducting an initial search, the entire police department was left stunned by the scale of the recovery.
Four tape-wrapped packets discovered inside opened bag
According to official reports, the woman's trolley bag was searched in accordance with proper protocols. During the search, four separate packets wrapped tightly in brown cello tape were recovered from inside the bag. The police stated that a strong, pungent odor characteristic of ganja emanated from the packages. Upon formal examination and weighing, the total quantity of the narcotic substance found inside these packets amounted to 8.295 kilograms. Following this discovery, the police took the woman into custody and initiated formal questioning.
Accused is a native of Shahjahanpur working in Noida housekeeping
Police identified the arrested woman as 22-year-old Chandni Joshi, wife of Vishal, residing at Ajitganj, Kotwali police station jurisdiction, in Shahjahanpur district. Interrogation revealed that she currently works in housekeeping in Noida. The police claimed that during questioning, Chandni disclosed that she had brought the ganja consignment from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and was tasked with handing it over to an unknown person in the city. The police are currently working to identify the intended recipient of the consignment.
ACP states mobile data will unravel the distribution network
Providing details about the case, Cantt ACP Dr. Priyanka Bajpeyi stated that the suspect was nabbed along with a trolley bag during the checking campaign, yielding over eight kilograms of ganja. According to the ACP, the woman admitted during questioning to bringing the consignment from Odisha and executing deliveries in Kanpur. Furthermore, the police noted that the accused confessed to having transported similar contraband from Odisha on one or two previous occasions.
Juvenile involvement in past theft case uncovered
Dr. Priyanka Bajpeyi revealed that the woman's past criminal record was also thoroughly checked. According to the police, around the year 2019, while she was still a juvenile, a house theft case was registered against her, though she was later released. The police have now initiated procedures to send her recovered mobile phone for forensic analysis. By analyzing call details and mobile data, investigators aim to identify the individual who supplied the ganja in Odisha and the primary receiver slated to collect it in Kanpur.
Police probe spans from supplier to receiver across states
The police investigation is not limited merely to recovering the narcotics and executing an arrest. Through mobile phone forensics and other digital evidence, investigators are actively tracking the individuals with whom the accused was in contact. The police believe that call detail records and data analysis will help them trace the supplier in Odisha and the receiver in Kanpur. Officials confirmed that strict legal action will be pursued against all individuals implicated by the ongoing investigation.
Case registered under NDPS Act and accused presented in court
The Railbazar police registered Crime Case Number 149/2026 against Chandni Joshi. The accused has been booked under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act. According to the police, after completing all necessary statutory procedures, the accused is being presented before a court of law. Officials reiterated that the campaign against drug trafficking and illegal narcotics trade in Kanpur will continue unabated, with ongoing efforts directed at dismantling the entire supply and distribution network.
