In a bid to enhance transparency and prevent future lapses, the temple authorities have decided to streamline the procedure for counting cash donations. Moving forward, the counting of devotee offerings will be confined to a single daily shift, operating strictly between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. This major operational change comes at a time when the entire nation is closely watching the developments surrounding the financial irregularities at the sacred site.
Devotee Offerings Funneled Into Stock Market
The investigation has exposed a calculated scheme where the stolen donations were diverted into financial markets. The individuals accused of committing the theft used the pilfered funds to invest in the stock market. To cover up their tracks and hide the illegal source of the money, the accused executed a multi-step transfer system. They initially deposited the stolen cash directly into the bank accounts of their close relatives and trusted acquaintances. After the cash was successfully placed in these external accounts, the funds were systematically transferred online into the personal accounts of the accused, making it difficult to trace the money back to the temple's donation boxes.
Gag Orders Issued to Security Staff
Apart from the financial audit changes, there were significant attempts to control the flow of information regarding the security failure. Following the exposure of the theft, a strict communication ban was placed on the ex-servicemen employed at the temple. The security personnel were explicitly ordered not to speak to anyone about the incident. A directive was sent out via a WhatsApp group called 'Ayodhya Dham Ex-Servicemen Service Group', warning the staff members to maintain absolute silence and refuse to answer any queries from outsiders. A screenshot of this WhatsApp directive subsequently leaked onto social media, sparking public debate over the transparency of the administration during the crisis.
Mass Arrests and Leadership Shake-up
The theft scandal first erupted in June 2026, causing immense public outrage when it was discovered that temple offerings were being siphoned off. Law enforcement agencies acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of eight individuals who were allegedly part of the conspiracy. The shockwaves of the scandal reached the highest levels of the temple's governing body. Under intense public pressure, Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and Trustee Anil Mishra offered their resignations. The resignations were formally accepted during an emergency meeting of the trust.
