Thefts from shops, restaurants and big showrooms are common enough, but an incident from the Neuria police station area of Pilibhit has left people questioning basic humanity itself. Here, thieves did not even spare a cremation ground. Just before the pyre was to be lit, the firewood laid out for the last rites was found missing, forcing the grieving family to call the police to the cremation ground.
The case comes from Neuria Nai Basti, where a resident named Sitaram had passed away. News of his death plunged the family into grief, and relatives and loved ones were informed at once. Meanwhile, firewood and cow-dung cakes had already been carried to the village cremation ground to prepare the pyre, so that the last rites could begin the moment the body arrived.
A Shock on Reaching the Cremation Ground
When the relatives and villagers gathered and arrived at the cremation ground carrying Sitaram's body, the scene there left everyone stunned. The firewood that had been placed for the cremation was gone. An unknown thief had walked off with the very wood meant for the pyre. Villagers say thieves have grown so brazen that they no longer fear death or even a cremation ground, and that the incident makes it painfully clear how little room is left for humanity in some hearts.
Wood Arranged Again, Then the Last Rites
After this bizarre theft, the angry and heartbroken family immediately phoned the police to the cremation ground. The officers who reached the spot were themselves astonished to hear what had happened. The relatives then hurriedly arranged firewood once more, and Sitaram's body was finally consigned to the flames.
Villagers March Straight to the Police Station
People usually head straight home once the last rites are complete, but here the anger ran so deep that after performing the cremation, the deceased's relatives, loved ones and a large crowd of villagers went directly to the Neuria police station. The family submitted a written complaint about the theft and demanded strict action against those responsible. For now, the incident has spread through the district like wildfire, with the shameful act being discussed everywhere, and the police have launched an investigation.
