A father and his son died after being electrocuted in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district on Sunday, leaving the entire village in shock and the family in mourning.
A monkey, a broken branch and a live wire
The incident took place in Belwa Basahiya village under the Sakaran police station area. A tree stands right in front of Geetesh Mishra's house, close to where an LT electricity line passes. On Sunday, a monkey climbed the tree, and in the process a branch snapped off and fell onto the power line. Geetesh's son Piyush moved to clear the branch off the wire, but the moment he touched it he was electrocuted and collapsed on the ground.
Father rushed to save him, and was electrocuted too
Seeing his son fall, Geetesh ran to rescue him. While trying to free Piyush from the wire, he too came into contact with the current. Within moments, both father and son lay electrocuted on the spot. People nearby rushed to the scene after witnessing this and immediately alerted the electricity department as well as an ambulance. Both were rushed to the nearby Sanda health centre, where doctors examined them and declared both dead.
Police reach the spot, bodies sent for postmortem
Police reached the scene as soon as they were informed. They prepared an inquest report for both bodies before sending them for postmortem. Station house officer Pradeep Kumar said, "The bodies have been sent for postmortem after the inquest, and necessary action will be taken once a complaint is filed." The village has been gripped by grief since the accident, and the family will take time to come to terms with the sudden loss.
More electrocution incidents reported the same day
Before the Sitapur accident, a major electrocution incident had also occurred in Badaun, where a DJ trolley belonging to a group of kanwariyas collided with a high-tension line. This electrocuted seven children and killed one young man. The moment the DJ's loudspeaker touched the high-tension line, current ran through the trolley, triggering a loud explosion and flames that caused panic at the spot. The same day, news came in from Panvel in Maharashtra's Raigad district that five people were injured after being electrocuted during a Dahi Handi event. All the injured are currently undergoing treatment.
