The impact of ongoing rainfall across the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand is now visibly affecting rivers flowing into the lower reaches. In the pilgrimage town of Rishikesh, the appearance of the holy Ganga has underwent a noticeable transformation in recent days. Normally characterized by clear blue or green hues, the river water has turned distinctly muddy and brown. Visitors and devotees arriving at the riverbanks are readily noticing this striking visual change from a distance.
Heavy Rainfall Carries Silt and Sediment
During intense spells of rain in the hills, the runoff washes significant amounts of soil, fine sand, and silt off the mountain slopes. This sediment-laden runoff cascades into smaller streams and natural channels, which eventually merge into the main flow of the Ganga. As numerous mountain tributaries join the river before it reaches Rishikesh, the concentration of soil and silt within the water increases substantially during continuous rain. Consequently, the river loses its clarity and takes on a turbid shade, a seasonal phenomenon typical of the monsoon period.
Firsthand Observations by Tourists at the Ghats
For tourists and visitors arriving along the banks of Rishikesh, the shift in water quality is immediately apparent. Varsha, a tourist visiting the area, observed that while the Ganga typically looks clear and pristine, the water near the ghats currently exhibits a muddy appearance even from afar. She mentioned that while taking a dip in the river, considerable amounts of sand and soil settle onto the body. The sediment carried down from the hills is clearly felt by those entering the water.
Rapid Shift in River Flow and Water Levels
Along with the change in color, the current monsoon weather has brought swift alterations to the Ganga's water levels and current. The influx of rainwater from upper catchments has accelerated the river's velocity and expanded its volume. Such variations in color, sediment load, and flow speed remain a standard natural outcome of mountain rainfall, which gradually subsides once the weather clears and precipitation diminishes.
