The proposed construction of the elevated road stretching from Mohkamppur to Asharodi in Dehradun has triggered widespread distress and anger among families whose homes fall directly in the path of the project. Hardworking individuals who toiled day and night in other people's homes and saved every single penny to build a modest shelter now face the looming threat of losing their roofs in the name of urban development. These affected residents have made it clear that they cannot bear to watch the small homes they built through years of blood, sweat, and toil get destroyed in a matter of moments.
Pleas for Proper Rehabilitation and Alignment Changes
The impacted residents have formally appealed to the local administration and the government, demanding either appropriate arrangements for their relocation and compensation or a modification in the alignment of the elevated road to protect their dwellings. They argue that altering the route would save their lifelong investments from turning into dust overnight, sparing them from profound destitution and despair.
Debt-Financed Homes Face Imminent Demolition
Parshuram, a resident of Badripur originally hailing from Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh, shared his plight, explaining that he had migrated to Dehradun in search of livelihood. Working as a daily wage laborer, he somehow managed to construct a small house where he lives with his dependents. However, the sudden development news has left him deeply traumatized. He noted that he built his house by taking out loans and borrowing money from various sources. Parshuram questioned where he would take his children if he lost his shelter, pointing out that earning a meager daily wage makes it nearly impossible for a poor person like him to construct another home from scratch.
Constant Fear of Displacement and Destitution
Another resident, Ramdevi, shared that she engaged in manual labor and saved money penny by penny to build her house, even having her daughters work in other households to help sustain the family. She questioned the fairness of sacrificing the modest homes of impoverished citizens to build wide roads. The constant anxiety of losing her shelter has deprived her of sleep, leaving her in perpetual fear about where she will take her children if eviction becomes a reality.
Closed Doors to the Past and Life Rooted in Dehradun
Ramdevi explained that after moving to Dehradun from her village in Uttar Pradesh years ago, she completed all local formalities, including surrendering her previous ration card and Aadhaar card. Consequently, she has no village home or documents left to return to. With all official paperwork, children's schooling, and employment tied strictly to Dehradun, the mounting stress has taken a severe toll on her health and well-being as she looks at her young children with a heavy heart.
