A high-voltage confrontation in the Gaighata area of North 24 Parganas district ended with the death of Prahlad Das, the prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl. The fatal encounter occurred during the early hours of Tuesday when law enforcement officers escorted Das back to the scene of the incident to reconstruct the timeline and sequence of the heinous crime. What was intended to be a routine investigative procedure quickly descended into chaos and gunfire.
Gunfire During Investigative Reconstruction
According to investigative accounts, an escorting police team arrived with Prahlad Das at the crime spot before dawn to carry out the formal re-creation of Sunday's events. However, just as the team was concluding the physical reconstruction of the crime sequence, the accused seized a momentary lapse to snatch the official revolver of one of the personnel on duty. Without warning, he opened fire directly at the officers present, inflicting gunshot injuries on one police officer during the sudden assault.
Retaliatory Measures and Hospital Confirmation
Faced with an armed attack on their unit and imminent mortal danger, the accompanying police squad returned fire in self-defence. Das sustained severe gunshot wounds during the brief retaliatory volley and collapsed at the site. The injured accused was immediately loaded into a police vehicle and rushed to the nearby Chandpara Rural Hospital for emergency trauma treatment. Medical staff on duty examined him upon arrival and officially declared him dead.
The Underlying Crime and Swift Arrest
The encounter is the latest escalation in a harrowing tragedy that unfolded this past Sunday. The decomposed and naked body of a 17-year-old female victim was discovered abandoned behind a neighbouring residence in Gaighata. The grieving family made serious allegations, asserting that the teenager was subjected to savage sexual violence before being murdered. Acting on the complaint and physical evidence, local police moved swiftly on Sunday itself to apprehend Prahlad Das, who was identified as a relative of the victim's family.
Political Statements and Legal Debates
The lethal encounter has ignited significant political debate surrounding law enforcement methods and the criminal justice system in the state. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh publicly backed the decisive actions taken by the police team at the spot. Drawing parallels to an earlier occurrence in South 24 Parganas where an accused killer attempted to escape custody and was similarly engaged, Ghosh asserted that accountability must remain uncompromising.
Addressing the development, Ghosh remarked, "Everyone will have to be brought within the ambit of justice. No one is above the law." He further maintained that anyone flouting the legal framework must face equivalent consequences. Pointing to public disillusionment, Ghosh stated that law enforcement sometimes must take severe, difficult steps to re-establish public trust. He claimed that after extended periods marked by compromised order, establishing clear deterrence serves as an indispensable lesson against horrific violations in society.
