A tragic incident has come to light from West Bengal where Vrishi Mukherjee, the niece of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, was found hanging at her residence in Birbhum district. According to a senior police official, the body of 28-year-old Vrishi Mukherjee was recovered this afternoon from a room on the second floor of her house located in the Kusumba village of the Rampurhat area. Police stated that the mortal remains have been sent for a post-mortem examination while an investigation is currently underway. Authorities added that the exact cause of death will be definitively ascertained only after the autopsy and other mandatory medical reports are finalized.
Family background and professional status
According to details shared by local sources, Vrishi was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, who is a maternal cousin of Mamata Banerjee. Nihar Mukherjee has previously served as the block president of the Trinamool Congress in Rampurhat. The family's maternal ancestral home is situated in Kusumba village. Professionally, Vrishi Mukherjee was employed as a Group-C staff member at a local educational institution. Family members revealed that she had been grappling with depression for the past few years and was undergoing regular medical treatment for her condition.
Job loss following recruitment cancellations
Relatives disclosed that the young woman had been under severe mental stress after losing her employment. This came in the wake of a Supreme Court directive that nullified appointments across state-aided schools amidst allegations of systemic corruption. During the investigation into the recruitment scandal, central agencies uncovered that approximately 90 percent of the OMR sheets contained discrepancies and tampering. The probe flagged several candidates, including Vrishi Mukherjee, who had allegedly benefited from these irregularities. Subsequent legal steps resulted in the termination of her job. Additionally, ongoing matrimonial discord and divorce proceedings with her husband added to her personal troubles.

The body of Ashish Banerjee, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from Rampurhat, was discovered inside the party office in Birbhum. Police had recovered a note from the scene at the time. Ashish Banerjee had previously held crucial ministerial portfolios such as school education and agriculture in the West Bengal government and had also served as the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly. However, he had faced defeat against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Dhruba Saha in the 2026 assembly elections.
