A wave of public anger has erupted in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal over the distribution of government financial assistance. A intense protest broke out at the Gogla Gram Panchayat, located within the Durgapur-Faridpur block, as local residents expressed their frustration over failing to receive benefits from the Annapurna Bhandar scheme. On Monday, a large group of villagers surrounded the Panchayat Pradhan to voice their grievances. The situation escalated significantly during the demonstration when protesters began throwing eggs at the Pradhan. In response to the growing tension, the Laudoha police station dispatched a team to the site, where officers eventually managed to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
Allegations of Irregularities in the Scheme
The protesters claim that women from impoverished households had submitted their applications for the Annapurna Bhandar scheme a considerable time ago. However, they allege that these forms were never forwarded by the Panchayat office for processing. The residents argue that there has been severe negligence in the handling of these applications, which has resulted in eligible, needy women being deprived of their entitled government support.
Claims of Favoritism and Improper Selection
One of the demonstrators leveled serious allegations, asserting that the local Panchayat administration is operating based on 'cronyism and bias.' According to the protesters, individuals from affluent backgrounds who own large houses are receiving the scheme's benefits, while women from genuinely poor families have yet to see a single rupee deposited into their bank accounts. The demonstrators have issued a warning, stating that if the funds are not disbursed promptly, they will launch a much larger protest movement.
Demand for Public Transparency
A local woman participating in the protest questioned the government's claims, noting that the Chief Minister had promised the direct transfer of funds to the accounts of all eligible women. She asked why, despite these promises, poor women remain excluded from the benefits. The protesters are demanding that the Panchayat office make the status of all submitted application forms public and ensure that funds are transferred to every woman who applied. They emphasize that the lack of transparency is the primary reason they felt compelled to take their protests to the streets. The situation remains tense in the Gogla Gram Panchayat area following the incident.
