A daily-wage worker who had gone missing was found dead in a well right outside his own home in West Bengal's Ukhra area on Sunday morning, sending shockwaves through the neighbourhood. The incident took place in the Khadarpara locality under the Andal police station area of Paschim Bardhaman district. The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Sasthi Bauri, who worked as a daily-wage labourer and frequently travelled out of town in search of work. Local police have launched an investigation into the case.
Missing for three days, family launched its own search
According to those familiar with the case, Sasthi Bauri had been missing for three days. His family said he had left home two days earlier for work. Since Sasthi often travelled out for daily-wage jobs, his relatives did not immediately suspect anything when he failed to return on time. But as the hours stretched into days without any word from him, the family grew anxious and began searching for him themselves. They also reached out to relatives and acquaintances for any information, but no one could tell them where he was.
Body spotted floating in the well while locals drew water
On Sunday morning, several residents had gone to the well in front of the house to draw water when they noticed a body floating on the surface. Word spread through the locality within minutes, and a crowd quickly gathered at the spot. Locals alerted the Ukhra police outpost, and officers rushed to the scene soon after. With the help of nearby residents, police pulled the body out of the well. It was later identified as that of Sasthi Bauri.
Cause of death still unclear, body sent for post-mortem
Police have sent the body to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination so that the exact cause of death can be established. It remains unclear how Sasthi Bauri ended up inside the well, whether he fell in accidentally or whether there is another reason behind his death. The Ukhra police outpost has opened a detailed investigation and is questioning people in the area to piece together what happened.
Similar well scare in Maharashtra: elderly woman rescued after two days trapped inside
A separate incident involving a well has come to light from Chandvad district in Maharashtra, where an elderly woman spent two days trapped inside a dark well before she was rescued. The woman had gone missing since August 29 after she set out to visit her son's house. Two days later, it emerged that she had fallen into an open well near a bus stand. Some boys walking past the well happened to peek inside and spotted her. She was then pulled out safely with the help of Chandvad police and a municipal council team.
