A deeply disturbing case has come to light in the Bardhaman police station area of West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman district, where three men have been booked for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a minor girl inside her own home. The incident took place in the canal embankment area of Hatu Debangunj, and police began investigating after the victim's mother approached the local station with a written complaint.
Accused allegedly barged into the house at night
According to the complaint, the incident happened on the night of July 27, 2026, at around 9 pm, when the victim's mother had stepped out and was not present at home. Three men allegedly barged into the house during this window and attempted to force themselves on the minor. The complaint states that as the girl resisted and cried out, family members along with neighbours living nearby rushed to the house, and the three accused fled the scene before anything further could happen. It has also been alleged that while escaping, the accused turned on the victim's parents and assaulted them as well. Following the incident, the minor was rushed to a hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.
Case registered against three, one arrested so far
Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case against all three named accused and arrested one of them, identified as Ilias Malik. The remaining two accused named in the complaint, according to the victim's family, are yet to be taken into custody. Speaking out on Sunday, the victim's father, Kamal Hussain, alleged that the two absconding accused have not been arrested even now and are instead issuing threats to his family. He appealed to the police to trace and arrest both the remaining accused without further delay, saying the ongoing threats have left the family anxious.
Family alleges political backing, police maintain silence on claim
Adding another layer to the case, the victim's family has claimed that the accused enjoy the backing of political figures, which they believe is why the two men are still at large. This claim, however, has not been independently verified through any official channel, and police have not made any statement confirming or denying it. Police officials have only said that the investigation into the incident is continuing and that every allegation raised in the complaint will be examined before further legal action is taken as per the law.
Second such case to emerge from the district in days
This is not the only disturbing case to surface from Purba Bardhaman district recently. Just days before this incident, the suspicious death of a 28-year-old tribal married woman had also been reported from the same district. Her family had alleged that she was first gang-raped and then murdered, after which her body was dumped in a field. In that case, police had acted swiftly on the family's complaint and arrested two accused within 24 hours, though it remains a separate investigation from the present case involving the minor.
