A severe railway accident occurred on Sunday south of the Egyptian capital of Cairo, involving a violent collision between two passenger trains. The disaster resulted in at least four fatalities, while 88 other travelers sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency response teams and health authorities were immediately mobilized to handle the unfolding crisis at the site.
Location and Official Response
The tragic incident took place in the Al-Ayyat district of the Giza Governorate, situated approximately 52 kilometers away from Cairo. According to details shared by the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, a train traveling toward the Fayoum Governorate struck another train heading in the direction of the Aswan Governorate from behind. The impact of the collision caused one of the trains to derail, although the ministry has not yet clarified which of the two vehicles left the tracks.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that all 88 injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, utilizing a social media post to mandate an immediate inquiry into the crash. He emphasized the strict need to hold accountable any parties found responsible for the disaster.
Rescue Operations and Past Incidents
Rescue and relief crews were dispatched to the location without delay following the collision. Railway officials deployed cranes and other heavy machinery to clear the wreckage from the tracks and work toward normalizing train services in the area as quickly as possible.
Records indicate that the same Al-Ayyat district has witnessed rail accidents in the past. In September of last year, a collision occurred between two freight trains within this exact region, an incident that had resulted in injuries to a train driver and his assistant.
