Another perilous journey across the ocean by individuals chasing the dream of reaching Europe has ended in a major tragedy. A small boat packed with migrants capsized in the sea near the northwestern coast of the West African nation of Senegal. The disaster claimed the lives of at least 21 people, while only a single individual could be rescued alive. The exact total number of passengers aboard the vessel has not yet come to light. Senegalese authorities stated that the death toll is currently an initial figure, and search operations out at sea remain ongoing. The Ministry of Interior of Senegal stated in a statement released late Saturday night that 21 bodies were recovered following the mishap, with one person successfully rescued. According to the ministry, support is being extended to the families of the deceased. Officials noted that the search and rescue operations have not yet concluded, meaning the death toll could potentially rise further.
Incident Occurred Between Dakar and Saint-Louis
According to media reports, a pirogue boat carrying migrants overturned near the sand dunes of Lompoul on Saturday. This location is situated in the Kebemer department of Senegal and lies between the capital city of Dakar and the northern city of Saint-Louis. A pirogue is a small, flat-bottomed boat traditionally used for fishing and maritime travel in the coastal regions of West Africa. However, when large numbers of people are crammed into such vessels and sent toward Europe, the dangers at sea multiply exponentially. According to a report by the Senegalese newspaper ‘Le Soleil’, most of the victims who lost their lives in the accident hailed from the Leone and Thippe districts of this same department.
142 Migrants Intercepted a Day Prior
Just a day prior to this tragedy, on Friday, Senegalese authorities intercepted another small boat attempting to travel toward Spain, carrying 142 migrants. Police reported that this group included 23 women, two infants, and two other children. Citizens of Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Nigeria were present aboard the vessel. Following this event, the government of Senegal announced plans to step up actions against human trafficking networks. The interior ministry statement emphasized that the administration is committed to curbing such networks and will strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries to achieve this goal.
Pressure Mounts on Spain's Canary Islands
Amid a growing number of people attempting the perilous journey from Africa to Europe, mounting pressure is being felt across Spain's Canary Islands. On Saturday, authorities on El Hierro island declared a state of emergency in response to the continuous influx of migrants. According to local officials, roughly 3,300 people have arrived on the islands aboard some 30 boats since the beginning of November. The Canary Islands are a part of Spain situated in the Atlantic Ocean near the northwestern coast of Africa, serving as a primary route for migrants attempting to reach Europe from West Africa.
Increased Maritime Patrols Lengthen Dangerous Routes
Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco have stepped up naval patrols in the ocean to deter illegal voyages attempted via small boats. Consequently, human traffickers have shifted their operations, dispatching boats from the coasts of Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea. This shift has made the maritime journey to Europe significantly longer and far more hazardous than before. Undertaking long distances in small boats carries extreme risks. Inclement weather, towering waves, overcrowding beyond capacity, and a severe shortage of food and drinking supplies frequently prove fatal for travelers.
