Deepawali is celebrated with immense enthusiasm across Uttar Pradesh, with people indulging in heavy fireworks for several days. However, the deafening noise of crackers and heavy smoke take a severe toll on stray and domestic animals. Pets kept indoors often get frightened by loud explosions and may even stop eating due to extreme stress. Given these risks, giving special attention to your companion animals during the festival is crucial. Senior veterinarians in Agra have outlined several important guidelines to protect pets from firecracker noise and toxic fumes.
Loud Firework Noises Trigger Severe Stress in Pets
Senior veterinarian Dr. Sanjeev Nehru explained that the commotion caused by firecrackers can prove extremely dangerous for domestic animals. In many cases, excessive fear and anxiety can cause a sudden deterioration in their health. During peak celebrations, pets should never be left outdoors in the open. Instead, they should be housed in a quiet room inside the house. Dimming the room lights and playing soft music can help minimize the impact of external firecracker sounds.
He suggested that small cotton balls can be placed gently in the pets ears, taking utmost care not to push them deep inside the ear canal. Their condition should be monitored at regular intervals. If necessary, medications can be administered strictly under a veterinarians guidance, and no medicine should ever be given without professional consultation. Additionally, keep fresh water and their favorite food nearby. If they get scared, comfort them lovingly rather than scolding them.
Toxic Smoke Harms Respiratory Systems and Eyes
Dr. Sanjeev Nehru noted that the bursting of crackers during Diwali is detrimental not just to humans but also to the health of animals. The toxic smoke emanating from fireworks can severely affect the respiratory system of pets. Exposure to this smoke can lead to breathing difficulties, persistent coughing, and asthma-like complications.
He further pointed out that microscopic particles dispersing into the air during fireworks can cause eye irritation, redness, and infections. On several occasions, smoke can inflict serious damage on the eyes of domestic animals. Pet owners must ensure that animals are kept far away from smoky areas during celebrations and housed in a secure indoor environment. If any symptoms of respiratory distress or eye irritation appear, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.
Ensure Adequate Clean Water and Favorite Food Are Available
According to Dr. Sanjeev Nehru, the loud sounds of Diwali crackers can disrupt the normal routine of pets due to fright. During moments of panic, they may sometimes consume more water than usual. Therefore, it is essential that ample clean and fresh drinking water is available in the room where they are secured. Keeping their favorite meals nearby ensures they do not abandon eating amidst the tension.
He stated that if required, calming medications can be provided under professional veterinary advice, though administering any tablets without a prescription can be harmful. Consequently, pet owners must prioritize the safety and well-being of their animals throughout the Diwali festivities.
