A catastrophic disaster in mid-air was averted over the skies between Dubai and Tel Aviv when an ordinary passenger intervened to save hundreds of lives. A Boeing 737 operating Flydubai flight FZ1073 was cruising on October 30 when an unprecedented violent struggle erupted inside the cockpit. The aircraft suddenly pitched downward into a steep, terrifying plunge, sending shockwaves through the cabin as passengers braced for the worst before an Israeli plumber named Yaniv Hayoun sprang into action.
Cockpit Knife Attack and Rapid Altitude Loss
The inflight emergency began when co-pilot Neria Kraus, identified as an Omani national, reportedly launched a sudden violent assault on the flight's commander, Captain Smit Machhar. Machhar, an Indian citizen, was stabbed inside the locked flight deck as the assailant attempted to force the passenger jet into a catastrophic dive. Despite sustaining serious wounds, the wounded captain managed to unlock the armored cockpit door, providing a desperate window of opportunity for assistance from the main cabin.
As the aircraft began losing thousands of feet in altitude at alarming speed, the dire situation became immediately obvious to those seated outside. The jet was spiraling downward, leaving little time for standard emergency protocol as the controls remained jammed forward.
Chokehold on the Assailant
Hearing the commotion and realizing the plane was falling, Yaniv Hayoun rushed forward into the flight deck. Hayoun, who was travelling as an ordinary passenger returning to Tel Aviv, had no background in aviation or commercial flight operations. Confronting the attacker, Hayoun lunged forward, placed the man in a firm chokehold around the neck, and forcibly hauled him away from the navigation console.
Cabin crew members and fellow travellers quickly followed Hayoun into the cockpit, assisting in pinning down and securing the violent co-pilot. However, the jet was still descending rapidly toward the earth, with the injured captain incapacitated from his stab wounds.
Drawing Lessons from Aviation Documentaries
With the flight deck temporarily devoid of an active pilot at the controls, Hayoun stepped into the pilot station himself. Remembering that the nose had to be brought up to stop the dive, he grabbed the control yoke and pulled it firmly back toward himself. The mechanical response lifted the nose and stabilized the wings, leveling the aircraft just in time.
Moments later, another commercial pilot travelling as a passenger on off-duty status entered the cockpit and assumed full command. Hayoun later revealed to Israeli officials that his instinctive reaction came from regularly watching 'Mayday', a documentary television series detailing aviation accidents and emergency recoveries, which gave him a basic understanding of how flight controls counteract a steep descent.
Safe Diversion to Tabuk and High-Level Accolades
Working together, the off-duty pilots and crew coordinated an emergency diversion to the nearest available facility, touching down safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Medical teams attended to Captain Smit Machhar on the ground, while authorities took custody of the attacker.
Upon his return to Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally welcomed Hayoun, embracing him in an official reception. Hayoun was still wearing his blood-stained shirt from the struggle during the meeting. Donald Trump also praised the plumber's sheer grit and physical strength, pointing out how his day job lifting pipes contributed to his physical capability before noting:
"I think it's the most incredible story."Passengers later recounted the ordeal as a frantic, collective struggle where quick thinking by a plumber saved the entire flight from tragedy.
