A senior diplomatic delegation from India, led by Ministry of External Affairs official Alok Dimri, attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) national coordinators meeting in Islamabad. This visit marks the first official Indian delegation to travel to Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack and the subsequent launch of Operation Sindoor. Dimri's cordial and positive demeanor throughout the international conference quickly became a focal point among observers.
Reflections on State Media and Travel Aspirations
Speaking in an interview with Pakistan's state television, Alok Dimri shared his initial impressions of his first visit to the country, noting that he was very pleased to be in Islamabad. He remarked that his current exposure was limited solely to the federal capital, adding that he harbored a keen interest in visiting other prominent urban hubs such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sialkot if circumstances permitted. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan subsequently circulated his video remarks across its official social media channels.
Diplomatic Engagement Following UN General Assembly Friction
The three-day gathering of national coordinators officially commenced on September 29. The timing of the multilateral meeting was particularly notable, occurring shortly after sharp diplomatic exchanges between India and Pakistan during the United Nations General Assembly. At that global summit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif traded pointed criticisms. Despite those public disagreements, institutional obligations under the SCO umbrella brought both nations together, with conference visuals capturing Alok Dimri shaking hands with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Priorities on Trade, Connectivity, and Civilisational Dialogue
Commenting on the broader purpose of the conference, Alok Dimri stated that the assembly successfully unites Asian and Eurasian countries onto an integrated platform. Participating members worked collectively on shared agendas intended to advance mutual prosperity, welfare, and sustainable development. He emphasized regional connectivity, commerce, and transit corridors as foundational topics for member nations, characterizing the SCO as a durable bridge linking diverse sections of the Asian continent.
Institutional Context of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation currently consists of 10 permanent members, including India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Iran, and Belarus. Both India and Pakistan joined the multilateral grouping as full permanent members in 2017. Even during protracted periods of bilateral friction, the organisation provides an institutional space where diplomats and officials routinely interact on multilateral matters. During the discussions, Dimri also recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal to establish a civilisational dialogue platform, pointing out that member countries had formally agreed to develop such an initiative within the SCO framework. While structural tensions persist between the two neighbors, constructive engagements in Islamabad and Dimri's open interest in regional travel generated widespread attention on both sides of the border.
