Thousands of feet in the air, a traveler suddenly lost control and triggered a violent disturbance that forced the aircraft to alter its route and make an emergency landing. The dramatic incident unfolded on a Thursday night, leaving the crew and passengers with no choice but to take matters into their own hands, eventually restraining the unruly individual and securing him to his seat with duct tape. Several travelers onboard managed to capture photographs and video clips of the chaos as it unfolded.
Chaos Erupts on American Airlines Flight 618
The unsettling episode took place aboard American Airlines Flight 618. The aircraft had departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas and was bound for Newark, New Jersey. While cruising at high altitude past the halfway point of the journey, a man seated in the first-class section unexpectedly experienced a severe behavioral shift and began acting aggressively. Passengers Richard Olenick and Juan Mejia later recounted the harrowing ordeal. They noted that the disruptive individual was seated two rows behind them when he started hurling obscenities and turning violent. Although a flight attendant attempted to calm him down, the man only grew more hostile and agitated.
Restrained with Zip Ties and Duct Tape
According to Olenick, the passenger started physically striking the person sitting next to him. When a female traveler tried to intervene, she was also attacked. Recognizing the escalating danger, Juan Mejia stood up from his seat. Mejia is a retired member of the New Jersey police department. Olenick stepped forward to assist him. Both men recalled that the disruptive passenger continuously shouted profanities while hurling racial and homophobic slurs. A flight attendant handed Olenick, Mejia, and another traveler flexible plastic zip ties. Working together, the three men managed to bind the man's hands. He kept resisting and warning them to stay away, attempting to bite Mejia and actually succeeding in biting him, while also trying to bite Olenick. With the aid of a flight attendant, duct tape was then applied to immobilize him more securely.
Emergency Landing in Washington and Arrest
Acting on Mejia's advice, the group took care to ensure the tape was not placed over the man's mouth so he could continue to breathe properly. Even with his limbs restricted, however, he kept trying to stand up and fight back. Olenick stated that he spent roughly 15 minutes sitting in the man's lap to keep him pinned down until the plane made its emergency landing. When Olenick briefly tried to return to his seat, the passenger started thrashing again, forcing Olenick to rush back and restrain him once more. Amid the commotion, the flight was safely diverted to Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The moment the aircraft touched down, Maryland Transportation Authority Police boarded and placed the passenger under arrest. After the individual was removed from the cabin, the flight resumed its journey to Newark.
Airline Statement and Rising Incidents
In the wake of the incident, American Airlines released a statement emphasizing that the safety of its customers and crew remains its highest priority and that acts of violence are never tolerated. Aircraft typically carry security items such as flexible handcuffs and duct tape precisely to handle violent or unruly flyers. According to federal authorities in the United States, more than 1160 unruly passenger incidents have been logged so far this year.
