A students' organisation representing the Chakma community in India has praised a decision by the National Human Rights Commission to step in after allegations of violence and destruction of property at a government office in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district.
What happened at Bordumsa
The All India Chakma Students' Union (AICSU) says the trouble broke out on September 4, 2026, inside the ADC-cum-ERO Office at Bordumsa. According to AICSU, the office was hosting a hearing connected to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls when the alleged violence, vandalism and assault took place. AICSU, which describes itself as the apex body of Chakma students across the country, subsequently took the matter to the NHRC and asked the commission to act on the allegations.
NHRC orders a time-bound inquiry
The NHRC has taken cognizance of AICSU's complaint under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The commission has directed the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh to get the allegations examined and to submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks. AICSU says the commission also noted that the allegations, on the face of it, appear to involve violations of the human rights of those affected by the incident.
AICSU welcomes the move
Reacting to the NHRC's intervention, AICSU said in a statement, "The country has to run by the rule of law and the Constitution." The organisation added that it had approached the commission because it trusted the NHRC to deliver justice, and called the decision to order an investigation a welcome step by the country's apex human rights body.
Demand for action against those responsible
AICSU has also pressed the state government to pursue appropriate legal action against everyone found responsible for the alleged violence, vandalism, the assault on a public official, and the destruction of SIR forms during the hearing. The organisation said it expects the Arunachal Pradesh government to carry out a fair, impartial and time-bound inquiry, and to act against all those found guilty once the probe is complete.
