Assam Unveils Khel Maharan 3.0 Mascot, Jersey, and Anthem as Registrations Near 60 Lakh

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially launched the logo, mascot, jersey, and theme song for Khel Maharan 3.0, introducing an under-12 category and a monthly scholarship scheme for 5,000 young athletes.

Preparations for the third edition of Khel Maharan have gathered significant momentum across Assam with the unveiling of its official visual identity. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday introduced the official logo, mascot, jersey, and theme song for the grassroots sporting initiative. The flagship program is designed to spot young athletic talent from every corner of the state, grant them access to advanced training infrastructure, and build structured pathways for them to excel at elite competitive levels.

Public participation has witnessed an overwhelming surge ahead of the upcoming competitions. According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, nearly 60 lakh players have already enrolled for the multi-discipline event. Driven by this unprecedented level of interest, state authorities anticipate that this third iteration will eclipse the participation records established by the previous two editions. Sarma took to social media to celebrate the milestone, as he wrote on X that the stage is set to elevate the state's sporting trajectory to unprecedented heights.

Nurturing Elite Potential Through Specialised Training

The broader vision behind Khel Maharan extends far beyond hosting community games; it functions as a comprehensive talent identification pipeline. Athletes who display exceptional promise during the tournament are systematically drafted into advanced developmental programs. Records indicate that 612 athletes were handpicked for specialised coaching following the inaugural edition of the tournament, with an additional 554 selected after the conclusion of the second edition.

These emerging sports talents have undergone rigorous coaching regimens led by seasoned national and international trainers. The exposure has yielded tangible improvements in technical acumen, physical endurance, and match temperament. The efficacy of this grassroots pipeline was prominently demonstrated when the Assam Under-17 girls' football team clinched the championship title at the prestigious 64th Subroto Cup Football Tournament, serving as an empirical benchmark of the initiative's success.

Grassroots Expansion and the Under-12 Category

The third chapter of the sporting event will encompass eight competitive disciplines. Incorporating a recommendation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage children in sporting culture at the foundational stage, organizers have instituted the 'Shishu Krira Samaroh' (children's sports festival) specifically tailored for children under the age of 12.

Under this developmental bracket, under-12 divisions have been established in athletics, football, and volleyball. The aquatic segment has introduced differentiated age brackets as well, beginning with an introductory category for young swimmers aged between five and 10 years. State officials noted that introducing competitive brackets for primary-age athletes ensures technical fundamentals are inculcated during crucial formative years.

Stipends, Modern Infrastructure, and Long-Term Athlete Support

The overarching policy of the sports drive focuses on twin goals: unearthing raw athletic capability across rural and urban landscapes, while simultaneously driving mass community fitness. To ease the economic challenges faced by developing competitors, the state administration has rolled out a monthly financial stipend of Rs 3,000 each for 5,000 identified athletes, to be disbursed in structured phases.

Furthermore, major infrastructure projects are currently underway in Guwahati. Once dedicated sports hostels are ready and the comprehensive modernization of both the Sarusajai and Nehru stadiums is finalized, 1,500 shortlisted athletes will be inducted into full residential scholarship programs encompassing free lodging, specialized nutrition, and advanced coaching amenities. Candidates for these residential slots will be scouted through Khel Maharan alongside trials hosted by the Assam Olympic Association. Sarma concluded by urging the public to actively immerse themselves in educational, sports, and cultural pursuits to establish Assam as a prominent powerhouse across all domains.

Good jersey designs really matter for keeping athletes motivated and looking sharp on the field, and seeing 60 million players register is huge.

Sixty million registrations in Assam is an impressive number. It will be really interesting to see if all these kids actually end up getting proper modern training going forward.

Spot on, Ravikash. When I covered the Beijing Olympics, I saw that mass selection is easy, but sustaining elite training for thousands is the real test.

Sixty lakh registrations is no small deal, that's a massive number. But will all of them actually get proper training and facilities down the line?

Arjun Mehta@arjun-mehta·47m ago

Spot on, Karan. When I visited Guwahati last time, seeing the kids' energy at a local ground made it clear these numbers aren't just on paper.
