If your home is getting up to 200 units of free electricity every month under Karnataka's Gruha Jyoti scheme, there is an important update for you. From July 1, power distributor BESCOM has begun verifying beneficiaries right at their doorstep. BESCOM supplies electricity to eight districts across Karnataka.
The company has put out a fresh advisory so that eligible people keep receiving the scheme's benefits without any interruption.
What BESCOM Said
On its social media platform X, BESCOM wrote, "Gruha Jyothi Beneficiary Verification at your doorstep." It added that BESCOM meter readers will visit your home to verify documents and assist with the application process through a mobile app.
In short, beneficiaries do not need to go anywhere. The meter readers will come to your door, collect the required documents and help you complete the application.

Keep these papers ready for the verification:
- Aadhaar card
- Voter ID
- Ration Card
- Caste Certificate (if applicable)
- Passport-size photograph
- Rent Agreement (if applicable)
Who Gets The Benefit
The Gruha Jyoti scheme offers free electricity of up to 200 units per household every month. Tenants, renters and property owners can all apply. To decide eligibility, the average electricity consumption of a household between April 2022 and March 2023 is taken into account.
The key eligibility conditions are as follows:
- Only people residing in Karnataka can apply under this scheme.
- Only a domestic or resident household connection is eligible.
- Tenants can get the benefit even when the meter is in the house owner's name.
- A house owner will get the benefit for only one electric meter connection.
- Non-residents living in Karnataka can also get the benefit as long as they are residing in Karnataka.
- The Aadhaar card should be linked with the account or consumer ID on the electricity bill.
How To Apply Online
The application process through the Seva Sindhu portal works like this:
- Step 1: Visit the official Seva Sindhu portal and click on the 'Gruha Jyoti' scheme option available on the dashboard.
- Step 2: Select your preferred language, such as English or Kannada.
- Step 3: Enter the required details.
- Step 4: Tick the declaration checkbox, complete the CAPTCHA verification and click on 'Submit'.
- Step 5: Once the submission is successful, an acknowledgement number will be sent to your registered mobile number or email ID via SMS or email. Save this acknowledgement for future tracking and reference.
