In a major initiative aimed at sustaining agricultural growth and supporting rural livelihoods, the Union Cabinet has extended the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for five additional financial years. Under this decision, the flagship income support program will remain operational from FY 2026-27 through FY 2030-31. To ensure uninterrupted financial flow to millions of eligible agricultural households across India, the government has earmarked a massive outlay of Rs 3,15,614 crore. This continuation provides essential financial stability to farmers, enabling them to meet critical seasonal operational expenses.
Massive Outlay of Rs 3,15,614 Crore Earmarked for Five Years
The financial roadmap approved for the scheme allocates a substantial Rs 3,15,614 crore across the five-year extension period. This budget commitment reflects an ongoing policy emphasis on safeguarding agricultural income against market fluctuations and input cost inflation. By securing long-term funding through FY 2030-31, the initiative equips farm households with a predictable financial safety net, encouraging timely investment in cultivation practices and bolstering overall rural economic resilience.
Direct Benefit Transfer of Rs 6,000 Annually in Three Installments
Under the framework of the PM-KISAN initiative, eligible farming families receive direct financial assistance amounting to Rs 6,000 per year. The funds are disbursed in three equal tranches of Rs 2,000 each, transferred seamlessly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The release dates for these installments are synchronized with seasonal crop cycles and sowing schedules, ensuring that farmers possess liquidity precisely when purchasing seeds, fertilizers, crop protection chemicals, and machinery services.
Empowering Small Landholders and Reducing Informal Debt Reliance
The vast majority of beneficiaries under the scheme belong to small and marginal farming categories, who often face acute liquidity constraints prior to harvest. Since the launch of the scheme, a total of 23 installments have been successfully disbursed, delivering over Rs 4.47 lakh crore directly into farmers' bank accounts. An evaluation by NITI Aayog revealed that this structured income support has effectively improved cash availability for farm inputs, while significantly reducing farmers' reliance on high-interest loans from informal moneylenders.
