A significant economic opportunity has emerged for residents of Bihar. If your home is located near a recognized tourist attraction, you now have the chance to generate a substantial monthly income. The Bihar government has officially approved the Chief Minister Homestay Promotion Scheme, a strategic move designed to provide travelers with safe, homely accommodation while simultaneously boosting local livelihoods. This initiative is set to transform the way tourists experience the state by offering them a closer look at Bihar’s cultural heritage and traditional cuisine.
Expanding Tourism Infrastructure
Under this new scheme, the government has selected 34 tourist destinations across 16 districts. Major locations included in the program are Gaya Ji, Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali, Valmiki Tiger Reserve, and Kakolat. By allowing tourists from across the globe to stay in local homes, the government aims to foster a warmer, more authentic cultural exchange. This effort is expected to create robust self-employment opportunities for residents living in the vicinity of these popular heritage and natural sites.
Eligibility and Financial Support
The conditions for participating in the scheme have been kept straightforward to encourage widespread adoption. To qualify, your residence must be located within a maximum radius of 5 kilometers from a designated tourist spot. Each homestay operator is permitted to manage a maximum of 8 rooms. A major highlight of this policy is the substantial financial aid provided by the government, which amounts to 2.5 lakh rupees per room to assist with setup and infrastructure development.
Special Incentives for Women and Youth
The scheme places a special focus on empowering specific demographics. If a homestay is operated by a woman, a young person between the ages of 18 and 25, or a self-help group, the operators are eligible for an additional grant of 25,000 rupees per room. The Department of Tourism has set an ambitious target to register 1,000 such rooms within the next five years.
