For most families in Liti, potato farming is the top priority every single year. According to local resident Anand Prakash, systematic promotion of potato cultivation began around 1985. Over the years, nearly every household adopted this agricultural practice, effectively making it the backbone of the village's economic activity. It has become a symbol of the village's identity and a robust pillar of the local rural economy.
A Story of Economic Self-Reliance
The importance of this crop for the local families is evident, as the earnings from a successful harvest season easily cover household expenses for about six months of the year. More than half of the families in the village depend directly on this harvest for their survival. During the peak farming season, every member of the family works in the fields, effectively making the practice a vital source of employment. The harvested potatoes are transported to various markets through local traders and wholesalers, where buyers specifically prioritize the produce from this village due to its high quality.
Potential for Future Growth
Farmers in Liti believe that if they were to receive better road connectivity, modern storage infrastructure, and direct access to major agricultural markets, their potatoes could find a wider recognition well beyond the borders of Uttarakhand. With greater government support and technical intervention from the agriculture department regarding better marketing systems, the income of these farmers could see significant growth.
