Housewife Rani Sony launches 'Swad Station' in Ambikapur after learning Dosa-making on YouTube

A housewife named Rani Sony in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, has launched a new food startup named 'Swad Station' with an investment of about 2.5 lakh rupees, run alongside her son, serving items like dosas, momos, and sandwiches.

A fresh food startup called 'Swad Station' has opened its doors in the Nawapara area of Ambikapur, the divisional headquarters of Surguja in Chhattisgarh. This enterprise has been brought to life by a housewife named Rani Sony alongside her son, offering popular street food items such as dosas, momos, and sandwiches. Rani Sony shared that she has spent her life primarily as a homemaker and is a mother of two. While her husband receives a pension, she found herself with considerable free time during the day. Recognizing this, her son encouraged her to embark on something new, which inspired her to utilize a vacant shop and step into the food and beverage business.

Started with an investment of 2.5 lakh rupees

Setting up this new venture required an initial investment of approximately 2 to 2.5 lakh rupees. At present, the shop serves plain dosas, masala dosas, paneer dosas, momos, sandwiches, and various shakes. The founders noted that as the business establishes itself, additional food items will be incorporated into the menu in the coming days to offer a wider variety to customers.

Mastered the craft through YouTube

Interestingly, Rani did not attend any culinary school to learn how to make dosas and other items. Instead, she acquired these cooking skills entirely by watching YouTube tutorials and mobile videos. She had always enjoyed experimenting with different recipes at home, and she is now channeling that accumulated experience and practice into her commercial enterprise.

Current menu offerings

The shop currently provides customers with a selection of plain dosas, masala dosas, and paneer dosas, alongside momos, sandwiches, and refreshing shakes. Rani stated that because this is merely the beginning, the food items on offer will be expanded gradually over time.

Son supports the family business

Rani's son actively assists her in running the shop and preparing the food items. Explaining the preparation process for dosas, he noted that rice and lentils are first soaked and ground into a batter, which is then left to rest for a few hours. Afterward, salt is mixed in, the griddle is prepared, and the dosa is cooked to perfection. He also shared that idlis will soon be introduced to the menu at the shop.

This report from Ambikapur highlights a strong narrative of women empowerment and self-reliance, where a homemaker initiated a business venture with an investment of around two and a half lakh rupees alongside her son, supplementing a pension-based household income. From a socio-economic and structural perspective, the rise of such micro-enterprises fosters local livelihoods, encourages grassroots entrepreneurship, and stimulates the informal economy. Moving forward, as this startup expands its culinary offerings, its broader impact will likely be measured in regional economic participation and the inspiration it provides to prospective local entrepreneurs.

This startup demonstrates how digital platforms and YouTube are empowering homemakers to achieve financial independence without formal culinary training. Initiated with a modest investment of just two and a half lakh rupees, this micro-enterprise not only stimulates the local informal economy but also serves as an inspiring self-employment model for other women in the region.
