Train operations have come to a complete standstill on the vital KK railway line, widely regarded as the lifeline of Bastar, following a devastating landslide. The railway corridor has remained shut since September 24 after massive earth and rock debris crashed down between Malligura and Chhatriput. Torrential rains and floodwaters wreaked havoc across the area, damaging nearly 3 kilometers of railway track. In the interest of safety, authorities were forced to halt both passenger and freight train operations along this crucial corridor.
Round-the-Clock Restoration Work Underway on Damaged Track
At the disaster site, massive machinery and specialized personnel from the railway division are engaged in intensive relief and restoration efforts. Work continues non-stop through the night under powerful floodlights, with multiple JCB excavators and earthmoving machines deployed to clear immense mounds of soil and boulders while repairing structural damage to the track. Hundreds of railway officials, engineers, and ground staff remain stationed at the location around the clock, striving to restore track integrity as swiftly as possible.
Commuters Stranded as Passenger and Freight Services Halt
The prolonged shutdown has caused severe disruptions for local commuters and cross-state travelers alike. All 5 passenger trains originating from Jagdalpur remain suspended, while freight movement has been completely interrupted. Approximately 3,000 daily passengers who rely on this route to commute between Bastar and neighboring states are experiencing severe hardship. Deprived of train connectivity, travelers are forced to depend on costlier and more arduous road transport options. Simultaneously, the suspension of cargo rakes has dealt a heavy blow to regional commerce and disrupted key supply networks.
Daily Financial Losses and Restoration Timeline
The suspension of services has inflicted a severe financial toll on the national transporter. Due to halted passenger traffic and stopped freight operations, the railways is incurring estimated losses of approximately 10 crore rupees every single day. Given the extensive destruction across the 3-kilometer stretch, technical assessment teams indicate that passenger train operations to Jagdalpur are likely to remain suspended for about 10 more days. Railway authorities are maintaining complete focus on thoroughly stabilizing the slopes, completing essential civil works, and ensuring full safety compliance before authorizing any resumption of traffic.
