Personal disputes and social tensions inside the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi took a brutal turn when a disagreement over a female friend escalated into a violent knife attack. The altercation, which unfolded inside a student residence, left the victim with severe injuries and permanent physical damage.
The incident took place on November 5 at around 3 PM inside room number 119 of the Barak Hostel located on the JNU campus. According to investigators, the victim has been identified as Saurabh, a second-year language student. He was allegedly targeted by another student named Ajay using a sharp-edged weapon.
Reports indicate that Ajay harbored grievances regarding Saurabh's friendship with a female student. This underlying tension triggered a verbal argument that quickly degenerated into a physical confrontation. The attacker allegedly inflicted multiple knife wounds on Saurabh, resulting in grievous injuries to his head, face, hands, and eyes.
Immediately following the assault, the wounded student was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Center in Delhi for emergency medical intervention. Medical personnel confirmed that the trauma to his face and eye caused Saurabh to lose the vision in his right eye entirely. He underwent surgery and remained under medical observation at the trauma facility through Saturday evening.
Law enforcement officials stated that the prime suspect, Ajay, who is enrolled in a postgraduate program at the university, also sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Investigators noted that a total of four students were injured during the violent episode as the altercation drew in others.
Following the attack, the female friend of the victim approached law authorities to lodge a formal complaint. Based on her testimony, the Vasant Kunj North police station registered an FIR on Friday under charges of attempted murder and other relevant legal provisions.
South-West Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Goyal confirmed that an investigation is actively underway based on the registered case. However, as of Saturday evening, law enforcement agencies had not executed any arrests in connection with the assault.
In response to the grave breach of discipline, university authorities took swift administrative action. The accused students have been barred from entering the campus premises until the internal proctorial inquiry reaches its conclusion.
The outbreak of such extreme violence over a personal dispute within the academic institution has sparked serious concerns regarding campus safety and student welfare. Police maintain that further details regarding the exact sequence of events will emerge once the comprehensive investigation concludes.
