The historical and spiritual legacy of Odisha is set to achieve a prestigious national milestone as the sacred chariot wheels from the world-famous Puri Rath Yatra will soon adorn Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Following formal approval from President Droupadi Murmu, the wheels representing the three grand chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will be transported to the nation's capital and installed as permanent symbols of India's glorious cultural traditions.
Official Approval for a Landmark Cultural Proposal
The initiative took shape during a high-level meeting held at Lok Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, where Arabinda Padhee, the Chief Administrator of the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration, met President Droupadi Murmu. During the audience, Padhee submitted a formal proposal recommending that the iconic wheels from the three consecrated chariots be given a dedicated space within the presidential estate. Recognizing the profound cultural and spiritual resonance of the annual festival, President Murmu gladly approved the request, marking a historic moment of national honor for the state of Odisha.
With official assent secured, preparations are getting underway to safely transfer the chosen wheels to New Delhi. Once placed within Rashtrapati Bhavan, these sacred relics will offer visitors from across India and around the globe a direct glimpse into the centuries-old devotional artistry and heritage of Lord Jagannath's holy abode.
Centuries-Old Traditions of the Puri Chariots
The annual Puri Rath Yatra is globally renowned for its meticulous architectural and religious rituals. Every year, craftspeople build three massive, distinct chariots completely afresh from specially selected timber
- Nandighosha: The majestic chariot crafted for Lord Jagannath.
- Taladhwaja: The towering sacred chariot constructed for Lord Balabhadra.
- Darpadalana: The ornate chariot designed for Devi Subhadra.
Unlike standard monument structures, these massive wooden chariots are dismantled immediately after the grand procession completes its ritual journey. Officials outline that the timber from the dismantled structures is handled according to strict traditions. A major portion of the wood is reserved for fuel in the legendary kitchen of the Shri Jagannath Temple, which feeds thousands of pilgrims daily. Meanwhile, other sacred components and structural parts of the chariots are auctioned off to eager devotees who treasure them as sacred mementos. Each subsequent year begins with the fresh construction of brand-new chariots from scratch.
Preserving and Promoting Odisha's Architectural Legacy
This landmark decision reinforces an ongoing effort to highlight Odisha's magnificent artistic history at the seat of Indian democracy. Prior to this approval, on October 29, 2024, four detailed replicas of the famous stone wheels from the historic Konark Sun Temple were permanently installed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre and within the lush expanses of Amrit Udyan. That earlier addition was aimed at giving national and international dignitaries a richer appreciation of India's architectural marvels. The upcoming arrival of the Rath Yatra chariot wheels will further deepen the spiritual and artistic footprint of Odisha within the presidential estate.
