Amidst the fast-paced modernization and bustling daily life of Hyderabad, a unique effort to preserve history has been quietly taking place along the streets of the old city. For the past 22 years, a passionate individual has been showcasing a modest yet extraordinary collection of rare coins right on the roadside. Far from being a traditional museum, this roadside display offers passersby a rare glimpse into historical monetary items spanning from the 1818 East India Company period to the Nizam dynasty of Hyderabad.
Rare Treasures Ranging From 1818 Tokens to Nizam Dynastic Coins
The collection features numerous items that are extremely difficult to encounter in modern times. Among the most notable attractions is a special token coin dating back to 1818, issued during the East India Company era. Additionally, the collection includes currencies from the British colonial rule, post-independence British India half-paisa coins, and several foreign coins. Rather than being mere metal pieces, this collection serves as a living archive that reflects the economic and cultural landscape of various bygone eras.
The Craftsmanship and Legacy of Handcrafted 'Mudda Paisa'
Sharing intriguing insights into historical coinage, the collector explains the intricacies of handcrafted coins from earlier periods, which were historically referred to as mudda paisa. During the reign of the Nizams and preceding eras, coin minting followed distinct traditional methods. If a handcrafted coin was made of gold, it was designated as an Asharfi, representing high-value wealth. If it was crafted from silver, it was recognized as a Rupaya. The specific mudda paisa currently in his possession is made of copper, showcasing the authentic craftsmanship of that historical period.
A Risk-Free Investment and an Enriching Lifelong Hobby
Having dedicated himself to this pursuit since around 2005, the collector strongly believes that coin collecting is one of the most rewarding hobbies in the world. He views it not merely as a pastime, but as a completely safe investment strategy with zero risk of loss. According to him, historical coins naturally preserve and enhance their value over time. Collectors can preserve these artifacts safely and, if financial needs arise in the future, sell them to satisfy their requirements without incurring any monetary loss.
A Message of Inspiration and Guidance for the Younger Generation
In an era where many young people drift toward unhealthy habits, this collector offers a meaningful lesson for the next generation. He points out that many youngsters today mistakenly adopt harmful practices, such as cigarette smoking, as leisure activities. In contrast, collecting antique coins is a deeply educational and intellectual hobby. Acquiring an old coin means studying the history, governance, and culture of the era it represents. Beyond displaying antique currency, his mission is to inspire youth to stay connected to their heritage and choose positive, constructive paths in life.
