To tackle the severe traffic congestion experienced during heavy rains, the Gurugram administration has launched an aggressive new strategy for the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, also known as NH-48. With the goal of ending the long-standing issue of gridlock on this vital route, a mega traffic plan has been put into effect. This strategic deployment includes the assignment of 260 additional police personnel who will monitor traffic flow on a 24×7 basis, ensuring that congestion is managed effectively before it spirals out of control.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Restrictions
To ensure the highway remains clear, authorities have pre-positioned critical response equipment. This includes the deployment of 5 cranes, 2 hydras, and 6 police vehicles, supported by a fleet of 17 dedicated bike riders. An ambulance will also remain on standby at all times to address emergencies immediately. Furthermore, a strict prohibition has been placed on the entry of two-wheelers and three-wheelers on the expressway. These vehicles will be denied access at all entry points to maintain road safety and smooth vehicle movement.
Monitoring Sensitive Zones
Following directives from the Commissioner of Police, these measures were implemented on Wednesday night. Specialized teams are now assigned to monitor sensitive locations across the city, particularly during the night and heavy rain showers, where traffic movement is most likely to be hindered. These teams are tasked with providing an immediate response to any situation that threatens to block the road. Every major entry and exit point of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway is now under close surveillance, and any violation of these traffic rules will result in strict enforcement action by the police.
Lessons from the Recent Highway Collapse
The urgency for this plan was triggered by the chaotic scenes on Tuesday, July 7, when torrential rain lashed Delhi and Gurugram, turning roads into waterlogged channels. The situation became critical when a significant portion of the highway near Narsinghpur collapsed, forcing authorities to close two lanes of the carriageway. This resulted in a massive backup that left thousands of vehicles crawling between Hero Honda Chowk and Kherki Daula Toll Plaza until late at night. Given the persistent risk of waterlogging, authorities have also advised local companies to encourage employees to opt for Work From Home.
