A significant political shift is unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir as Srinagar Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has reaffirmed his plan to resign from both the National Conference and his parliamentary seat on November 3. The chosen date coincides with the death anniversary of his father, the late senior Shia religious leader Aga Syed Mehdi. The lawmaker stated that his position has remained entirely unchanged since he first announced his decision, emphasizing that his determination to step down has not wavered in the slightest.
Steadfast Stance and Undecided Future Strategy
Explaining his decision to stay the course, Mehdi remarked that ground realities and political dynamics have not altered since his initial declaration. According to him, existing conditions provide no justification or reason to reconsider his planned departure from elective office and party responsibilities. When asked about his subsequent course of action, Mehdi said, "Let us see what turn circumstances take after that." He indicated that his future moves would depend on how the broader political landscape develops following his formal resignation.
Two Years of Simmering Internal Conflict
The rift between Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and the National Conference leadership has been developing over the past two years. The parliamentarian explained that the treatment meted out to him by the party apparatus left him with no alternative but to pursue his political objectives with greater clarity outside the organization. Mehdi pointed out that internal elements systematically sought to undermine his efforts and delegitimize his responsibilities regarding the shared political agenda. Under such circumstances, he concluded that continuing his association with the party had lost all political meaning and purpose.
Criticism of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah
The Srinagar lawmaker has been a persistent and vocal critic of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, asserting that the current dispensation has failed to honor the commitments that formed the foundation of the decisive public mandate secured in Kashmir. Mehdi has repeatedly questioned the internal working mechanisms of the ruling party. His central contention remains that the party leadership's approach toward constitutional rights has fallen short of the popular expectations generated during elections. According to Mehdi, Omar Abdullah has drifted away from the core political principles that the party historically espoused before the electorate.
The Reservation Dispute That Triggered Open Dissent
The ideological and administrative differences erupted into public view in December 2024 when Mehdi joined demonstrating students outside the official residence of Omar Abdullah in Srinagar. The mobilization was driven by educated youth and employment aspirants seeking extensive reforms to the prevailing reservation system in Jammu and Kashmir. Demonstrators argued that the available share of educational seats and government employment opportunities for open-merit general category candidates had shrunk excessively under existing reservation rules.
Stepping forward in support of the agitating students, Mehdi pressed the elected regional administration to resolve the structural grievances immediately. He established a specific timeline for governmental action and cautioned that failure to address the matter would compel him to participate directly in future public demonstrations. That decisive intervention placed him in sharp opposition to influential sections of the party leadership, solidifying the ideological breach that culminates in his impending departure from both parliament and the National Conference on November 3.
