National Conference lawmaker from Pahalgam, Altaf Ahmad Wani, widely known as Altaf Kaloo, along with party spokesperson Umesh Bhat, also known as Umesh Talashi, have come under police scrutiny. Both political figures have been named in a criminal complaint alleging that they physically assaulted a personal security officer assigned to protect the legislator. Following the allegations, law enforcement authorities initiated formal legal proceedings against the duo.
Police Complaint Filed at Anantnag Police Station
The case was registered at Anantnag police station after the designated security personnel submitted a detailed written complaint outlining the incident. According to the police official's statement, an argument broke out between him and the two political leaders, which quickly escalated into physical violence. The complainant alleged that he was assaulted while discharging his official security duties, sustaining bodily injuries during the scuffle. Acting on the grievance, the police registered FIR number 334/2026 under sections 121 and 351 of the Indian Penal Code, and an active probe is underway to determine the sequence of events.
Lawmaker Rejects Allegations and Details Counter-Claims
In response to the criminal case, Altaf Kaloo strongly refuted the charges, describing them as entirely baseless and detached from reality. Offering his account of the dispute, the legislator asserted that the security personnel had abandoned his post and was absent from duty without justification. According to Kaloo, the confrontation began only after he questioned the officer regarding his unauthorized absence from work. The lawmaker further claimed that instead of answering the query, the security officer behaved aggressively and physically pushed him, sparking the altercation.
Demand for High-Level Impartial Inquiry
Seeking an objective resolution, the Pahalgam legislator urged senior administrative and police leadership to intervene in the matter. Kaloo made a formal plea to the Inspector General of Police for Kashmir and the Senior Superintendent of Police in Anantnag, calling for an unbiased and thorough inquiry into the entire episode. He emphasized that the authorities should meticulously examine all factual evidence before issuing official statements or drawing conclusions regarding the incident.
