Jharkhand footballer Astam Oraon has shared new photographs on social media dressed in traditional tribal attire. Currently training with the senior Indian women's national football team camp, the defender used the pictures to express pride in her roots and cultural heritage. Oraon clarified that the photo shoot was an entirely personal decision and the attire had no affiliation with any football club.
Expressing Cultural Identity and Personal Pride
Speaking about her background, Oraon said, "I am extremely proud of the community I come from." She chose to wear the custom-designed traditional tribal dress specifically to celebrate that connection. For the young international athlete, staying grounded in her heritage remains a central priority despite her competitive sports career.
Competitive Career and Historic Captaincy
Oraon made sports history in 2022 when she captained the Indian national team at the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup. That appointment made her the first female footballer from Jharkhand to lead a national football squad. At the domestic club level, she has been a regular presence for East Bengal Club over the past 3 years.
Humble Beginnings and Rise in Football
Hailing from the Gumla district of Jharkhand, Oraon grew up in an agricultural household. Her parents are farmers, and she is the second among four sisters in a family of five siblings. Her early years involved significant financial hardships, with the household once holding only a ration card in terms of formal state support. Overcoming those challenges to succeed on the global pitch earned her widespread recognition, prompting authorities to build a sports stadium named in her honour in Gorratoli village, Gumla.
