Sisters in Koderma will no longer need to stand in long post office queues to send rakhis to their brothers this Raksha Bandhan. India Post has launched a fresh initiative this year that brings the entire process, from making the rakhi to booking its speed post, straight into school classrooms.
The rakhi gets made and booked right on school grounds
Under the plan, India Post will hold a Make and Send Rakhi competition in schools. Schoolgirls taking part will craft rakhis by hand, using their own creativity and design sense. Once the rakhis are ready, a special team from the postal department will visit the participating schools and book speed post deliveries right there on campus. The handcrafted rakhis will then be sent directly to the addresses of the girls' brothers, meaning neither the students nor their parents will need to make a separate trip to a post office. India Post believes the arrangement will save families time while also nurturing children's creativity and building their confidence in postal services.
Aman Kumar on why the department is doing this
Aman Kumar, a marketing executive at the Jhumri Tilaiya post office, explained that Raksha Bandhan is not just a festival but a symbol of the unbreakable love, trust and affection between brothers and sisters. He said India Post's effort is to ensure that no matter how great the distance, a sister's love reaches her brother's wrist on time. According to him, this special campaign has been designed this year specifically with that goal in mind, and that is why the postal department chose to take the initiative straight to schools rather than waiting for people to visit its counters.
Certificates and special prizes for the best participants
Aman Kumar also made clear that the initiative will not stop at being a cultural activity. Children who perform well will be formally recognised. From every participating school, the 10 best participants will be honoured with certificates of appreciation. Beyond the school level, 10 of the most outstanding and creative participants selected from across the entire Koderma district will also receive special prizes. This two tier recognition, at the school level and at the district level, is meant to encourage wider participation and reward genuine craftsmanship.
Waterproof covers to keep rakhis safe through the monsoon
With Sawan's rains falling continuously this season, India Post has made special arrangements to protect the rakhis in transit. Waterproof envelopes have been arranged specifically for this purpose, ensuring the rakhis stay safe from moisture damage. These waterproof envelopes will be available at one head post office, seven sub post offices and 77 branch post offices across the Koderma division. With this cover in place, the rakhis are expected to survive the rainy season and reach their destination without any damage.
The entire service costs just Rs 70
Aman Kumar said the total charge for this special service has been fixed at Rs 70. That amount covers the cost of 10 waterproof envelopes, a speed post fee of Rs 55, and another Rs 5 for other service charges. Anticipating the rush that post offices typically see around Raksha Bandhan, special counters will be set up at all the major post offices to handle the extra load. On top of that, a dedicated team will be deployed by the postal department to ensure the rakhis are booked on time, transported safely and delivered within the promised window. With these measures in place, India Post is aiming to make sure every sister's rakhi reaches her brother exactly when it should.
